Medical errors that occur in hospitals are a result of competing demands being met simultaneously. Burnout and poor concentration are caused by working long hours on a single shift. As a result, treatment may be overlooked, the wrong drug may be administered, or the wrong spot may be operated on. Hospitals with a sufficient number of nurses have seen a considerable reduction in medical errors (Milliken, 2018). As a result, adopting a policy that specifies the amount of hours that nurses should work can help to alleviate the health crisis that exists.
Patients have been affected by medical blunders that have resulted in permanent or temporary paralysis. It has also resulted in the death of people as a result of an overdose or an incorrect operation. They have also increased the expense of therapy when patients’ illnesses worsen and progress to life-threatening levels of severity (Senders, 2018). In order to guide hospitals on the exact number of hours a nurse should work, the policy will be critical. The document will also include guidance for balancing competing needs while still achieving the objectives set forth. Taking a break during working hours, for example, can help to lessen the likelihood of medical errors occurring.
