Assignment 3 – Homework help – Write readME-style metadata

AssignmentTutorOnline

Due 15 Mar
PAPER: AS MU CH S PA CE A S I T T AKE S
This assignment has two parts:
1) Homework help – Write a readME-style metadata for your data. Not all of your data (that could be a lot of
files!), just the top level/main folder. The metadata should be as comprehensive as
necessary for someone unfamiliar with your project and methods to understand and use
your data. As to format, it should follow the requirements and recommendations covered
in readings, activities, and class.
2) Provide explanation/justification for your decisions. Because you will be describing an
unique dataset, you will be making unique decisions about it. This is an opportunity for
you to help me understand why you’ve made those decisions. Use references from class
readings or elsewhere to support your decisions.
3) I will also need some way to look at the data you are writing a readMe for.
I strongly recommend the following resources to you (this means I will use it as a grading
reference):

Cornell guide to writing readMe style metadata:
https://data.research.cornell.edu/content/readme (there is a template!!!)
I mildly recommend the following (I won’t use it as a grading reference, but it will be useful in
helping you think about things. DON’T follow this format, but the information is good.):
Gebru, T., Morgenstern, J., Vecchione, B., Vaughan, J. W., Wallach, H., Daumé III, H., &
Crawford, K. (2020). Datasheets for Datasets. ArXiv:1803.09010 [Cs].

Examples:
After looking at a lot of readMe files, there aren’t any I want to give you as an example,
really. For the most part, they are lacking some significantly important section.
o E.g., ftp://mit.ecco-group.org/ecco_for_las/version_4/release2/ or ftp://mit.ecco-
group.org/ecco_for_las/version_4/release2/interp_monthly/ They aren’t bad, they

just aren’t complete…

Follow the template I linked above. Contact me with any questions.
FORMAT:
1) readME file: Follow the format recommendations covered in readings, activities, and
class. (no pdf, no docx, etc.)
2) Explanation/justification for your decisions: This paper is to be double-spaced, in a 12-
point font (Times New Roman) with 1-inch margins, using Help write my thesis – APA format for all citations,
in Microsoft Word format
3) Submit electronically through Canvas by 11:55pm EXT of the due date.
GRADING
Your grade will be a combination of the readMe file and the explanation that you provide for the
decisions you made. What I will be looking for:

Completeness of the readMe documentation, “The metadata should be as comprehensive
as necessary for someone unfamiliar with your project and methods to understand and
use your data.”
Follow the readMe template given. Give explanations for departing from, expanding on,
or ignoring parts of the template.
Your explanation should cite some references for supporting your decisions.

HUDK 4054 Assignment 3 – Create metadata in the readME format

AssignmentTutorOnline

The deadline is March 15th.
PAPER: A LOT OF PAPER TAKES A LOT OF TIME
There are two components to this assignment:
1) Create metadata for your data in the readME format. Only the top level/main folder, not all of your stuff (which could be a lot of files!). For someone new with your project and methodology to comprehend and use your data, the metadata should be as detailed as possible. It should be formatted according to the standards and suggestions discussed in the readings, exercises, and class.
2) Give reasons/justifications for your choices. Because you’ll be defining a one-of-a-kind dataset, you’ll have to make one-of-a-kind decisions about it. This is an opportunity for you to explain why you made the decisions you did. Support your decisions with references from class texts or elsewhere.
3) I’ll also need a method to inspect the data for which you’re writing a readMe.
I strongly advise you to read the following resources (which I will use as a grading reference):

The Cornell guide to creating readMe-style metadata is as follows:
(There is a template!!!) https://data.research.cornell.edu/content/readme
I’d like to suggest the following (it won’t be used as a grading reference, but it will help you think about things). This format should not be followed, but the information is useful.):
Morgenstern, J., Vecchione, B., Vaughan, J. W., Wallach, H., Daumé III, H., and Crawford, K. Gebru, T. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern, J. Morgenstern (2020). Datasheets are a type of datasheet that is used to store information about a set of data. [Cs] ArXiv:1803.09010.

Examples:
After browsing through a lot of readMe files, I can’t think of any that I’d like to use as an example. They are, for the most part, missing certain really vital sections.
o Ftp:/mit.ecco-group.org/ecco for las/version 4/release2/ or ftp:/mit.ecco-group.org/ecco for las/version 4/release2/interp monthly/, for example. They aren’t bad, but they aren’t great.

simply aren’t complete…

Use the template I provided above. Please contact me if you have any questions.
FORMAT:
1) Read the readME file and follow the formatting guidelines outlined in the readings, activities, and class. (i.e., no pdf, docx, etc.)
2) Justification/explanation for your decisions: This work should be double-spaced, in a 12-point font (Times New Roman) with 1-inch margins, and formatted in Microsoft Word using Help write my thesis – APA format for all citations.
3) Submit electronically through Canvas by the due date at 11:55 p.m. EXT.
GRADING
The readMe file and the explanation you provide for the decisions you took will be used to determine your grade. What I’ll be on the lookout for:

The readMe documentation’s completeness, “In order for someone new with your project and methodology to comprehend and use your data, the metadata should be as detailed as possible.”
Use the readMe template provided. Explain why you deviated from, expanded on, or ignored elements of the template.
