Current Issue Analysis in Ethics
One of the key trends in the higher education is the ethical challenge of balancing between free speech and campus civility. Like in the past years, the universities and colleges have continued to be centers for fighting for freedom of speech and expression. Both students and faculties understand their rights to fight for their freedom of expression and speech. However, the quest for engage in protests often threatens the core learning and research programs in the higher learning institutions (Pujol, 2016). Therefore, the increased cases of political division and differences has created a challenge in balancing the freedom of speech and civility in the American higher learning institutions.
The higher education institutions have always focused on promoting these freedoms. The administrators have worked with the student leadership to address their concerns. However, recent occurrences have challenged the values of maintaining balance between freedom of expression and civility. For instance, the current political environment and potential violent threats have increased in the university campuses and thus, creating concern over ambient learning environment in the institutions (Spencer, et al., 2016). Political hostility in the cities also places the university administrators and faculty at different situation.
In the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, the faculties have finding it challenging to maintain the balance between free speech and unacceptable behavior in the institutions. In the past, students could wear any clothing with political messages, mottos or religion statements that advocates for certain ideals without causing significant alarms. However, the current toxic political environment that involves the use of polarized messages that openly undermines certain believes and values has made the political campaign statements complex. According to Pujol (2016), the administration of the higher learning institutions faces an ethical dilemma on how to deal with the political alignment of the students without violating the freedom of speech rights of all students.
College counselling programs have been used to try and engage with the students to create an accommodating environment in the schools. The aim of the counselling program is to promote ethical rights for all students to express themselves freely, but still upholds civility in the institutions (Spencer, et al., 2016). The counselling also seeks to discourage the use of violence and threats as ways of solving political differences and disagreements. In spite of all, the administrators face a severe ethical challenge to balance between free speech and civility in the campuses.
The higher education administration is expected to strike a good balance between freedom of expression and speech and the maintaining secure climate on the university and college campuses. Free speech remains a critical part of the university and college life. It is expected that the universities should make efforts to develop a safe environment for addressing the various ideas and opinions. Moreover, the universities are always seeking to come up with new ideas and thus, it makes the higher learning institutions targets for opposition of free speech (Pujol, 2016). Going forward, the universities and colleges should continue to take significant steps in addressing the ethical concerns of maintaining campus civility while upholding the freedom of speech and expression.
In summary, the increasingly polarized political climate creates an ethical challenge of balancing between upholding free speech and still holds civility in the institutions. The faculty and administrators of the institutions are finding it challenging to engage the students and promote civility. Freedom of speech is fundamental as it helps the institutions to create new ideas. However, the external influence of politics and cultural barriers has created serious ethical concerns on how to promote civility while respecting the freedom of speech and expression. Counselling program and other initiatives should be adopted by the higher learning institutions to address the ethical dilemma.
