Policy Writing Instructions and Details:

Policies reflect the “rules” governing the implementation of the processes.

Procedures, on the other hand, represent an implementation of the policy and should evolve over time as new tools emerge, new processes are designed, or in response to other changes.

It is recommended that policies and procedures appear as separate documents.

You will write a draft Policy.  Specifically, for Test 3, you will write a Work-from-Home Policy for CNAQ faculty.  You will not write Procedures.

Writing Policy Guidelines:

The overall goal for any policy is for the design to be simple, consistent, and easy to use.  Often a template is used within an organization.

You will use a template for your draft work-from-home policy.

Good Policies:

  • Policies are written in clear, concise, simple language.  Minimum verbiage should be used.  Should be simple enough to understand by a new employee.
  • Policy statements address what is the rule rather than how to implement the rule.
  • Policies should represent a consistent, logical framework for action.

Policy Template

Please use the following template to create your Work-from-home Policy for CNAQ faculty.  The appearance of the policy should be professional, simple and enable easy reading.  Borders, boxes, tables are recommended.

Policy Template includes:

Headline: Includes policy title, effective date, policy number, policy approvals.

Purpose of the Policy: A concise statement for the rationale for the policy, including, if appropriate, reference to other documents, links, and other policies.

Policy Details: Provide additional details related to the policy (rule).

Policy Scope: Exactly who the policy applies to and the consequences for non-compliance.

Definitions: Definitions of terms (as needed).  Explain language that may be vague or confusing.

Policy Owner: The office and specific individual position title that should be contacted for interpretations, resolution of problems, and special situations.  Who’s in charge of the policy.

Policy Authority: The highest administrative or academic officer or group authorizing the policy. If appropriate, one might also note the next required review date.

Related Policies/References: for more Information: Information about related policies.

Implementation Procedures: Reference to detailed procedures that are recommended in order to carry out the intent of the policy.  This is a reference only.  You do not need to provide specific procedures.
