1. The document is an example of a letter that contains lectures of Charles Grandison Finney as a means to make a point about religion.
2. The document was written to directly talk to the people as well as to the church. The document was intended to preach about how people are slowly becoming unreligious and how the church seems to aid in this people’s detachment from their religion.
3. The document was entirely interesting and every part of it talks about important opinions about people and their connection to religion. But what interested me more was the part where Charles Finney explained how people become irreligious. He said that because of their weak faith. Their weak faith is influenced by their worldly desires and excitement. If they do not learn to eliminate these desires and excitement, they will eventually lead to a life against the teachings of God. Finney emphasized that the church must have a strong principle and to act uniformly.
4. The document entirely talked about religion and every part of it has meaning to it. I found the part where Finney said that great political and other worldly excitements are unfriendly to religion. I find this surprising because I believe that there are times when politics pulls us away from our beliefs and added with desires. When these two continue to possess our being, it begins to wash away our faith and then eventually lead away from religion. Finney’s reminder on keeping our faith strong and uniform is a realistic advice because it is the only way we can become one with God and act according to his teachings.
5. The document revealed how religion was a big part of the lives of the people at the time this was written. Back in the early times when everything such as politics, society, and relationships were not as peaceful as they are today, the only hope people had was to hold on to their faith. However, with Finney’s lecture, we realize that there was a time when all of the problems in the society has taken its toll to everyone, they seemed to have lost their connection to their faith and began to question how it could save them. In this document, Finney was making everyone realize that their strong faith in God and the church strong principle are the answer to their sufferings. It is also a reminder that the US should begin to believe in faith again.
