Annotated Bibliography Directions 1. Did the student include a research topic and question (10%)

• A research topic may include, but is not limited to: Christian architecture, the trinity, the historical Jesus, Paul and his writings, the Synoptic gospels, the Gospel of John, the martyrs and persecutions, Constantine, or Martin Luther. Part of choosing a topic is creating a research question. For instance, “what is the origin of the Christian basilicaâ€Â

2. Did the student compose a thesis statement (10%)

• The fundamental component of essays in academia is the thesis statement. Without the thesis statement you will not have adequate direction to write your essays. Generally a good thesis statement includes the following:

  a) State the research topic (1 sentence).
  b) State what most scholars think about the research topic (1-2 sentences).
  c) State your argument or position in regards to the research topic. You may also want to draw attention to how your argument agrees or differs with other scholarship (1-3 sentences).
  d) State what your essay is going to demonstrate or prove (1-2 Sentences).

• Here is an example of an excellent thesis statement:

  a. Scholars have debated about the origins of the Christian basilica for more than a century. b. For most scholars the Christian basilica traces back to Roman buildings. c. In this paper I will argue that the Christian basilica was influenced more by Jewish rather than Roman architecture. d. This paper will demonstrate that the Christian basilica has Jewish origins closely related to the Jewish temple.

  2) Did the student cite the correct quantity of academic sources (20%)

  • Quantity of Sources:
  – You must cite and annotate 4 Primary sources.
  – You must cite and annotate 6 Secondary sources. The secondary sources should include:

  • At least 2 books or monographs â€¢ At least 1 website.
  • At least 2 Scholarly articles

  4. Did the student format their citations correctly and consistently according to the Chicago Manual of Style (20%)

  • Our Religion 100 Blackboard site includes ‘Helpful Websites’ where you can learn more about Chicago Style. If you have questions that these websites do not answer then please email the professor.

  5. Did the student provide a proper annotation (30%)

  • The annotation of the source must include the following information: author’s argument, use of evidence, methodology, and conclusions or results. In addition, an explanation as to why the source is relevant to the research topic/thesis statement must be included. *Note: Sometimes the primary sources will not contain all of this information. For primary sources it is important to include as much of this information as possible.

  6. Did the student have correct format, grammar, and punctuation (10%)

  • Correct paper format includes: – Correct margins: 1 inch. – Spaces: Single Space.
  – Font: Times New Roman. – Font Size: 12.
