There is a growing social issue that is happening throughout the world today and it is called childhood obesity. According to Mayo Clinic, “Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. Children who are obese are above the normal weight for their age and height”. Children become overweight and obese for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. Only in rare cases is being overweight caused by a medical condition such as a hormonal problem. Childhood obesity can also create health concerns such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and these concerns can even follow them throughout adults. An estimated 43 million preschool children worldwide (under age 5) were overweight or obese in 2010, this is a 60 percent increase since 1990. “Of the world’s 43 million overweight and obese preschoolers, 35 million live in developing countries. By 2020, if the current epidemic continues unabated, 9 percent of all preschoolers will be overweight or obese-nearly 60 million children”(Harvard School of Public Health). Prevention for childhood obesity therefore needs to be a priority. Those who are in poverty are predominately people of color and as you can see from the chart above there is a high percentage of children of color who were diagnosed with childhood obesity.
