Ancient Female Rulers
Introduction
A comparative analysis of Tang Empress Wu Zetian and Pharaoh Cleopatra shows strong women who displayed exceptional leadership skills in ancient times. The Chinese Empress Wu Zetian lived from 624 to 705 CE and ruled from 690 to 704 CE (Peterson, 2016). Pharaoh Cleopatra lived from 69 to 30 BC and ruled from 52 to 31 BC (Welch & Halsted, 2019). The two female rulers had various similarities and differences which offer critical lessons about ancient leadership. The two female rulers assumed powerful positions in society despite the restrictive gender roles and diverse cultural backgrounds.
Similarities
Tang Empress Wu Zetian was born to a wealthy family of Wu Shihuo who worked as a chancellor in the Tang Dynasty. She was given a good education despite the restrictive roles of many girls during her time. She was married to Emperor Gaozong of Tang and later to Emperor Taizong of Tang (Peterson, 2016). Wu’s accomplishments included improving Keju Educational System and developing effective policies that made Tang dynasty powerful. She also created a police guard to enhance her safety (Peterson, 2016). Conversely, Pharaoh Cleopatra was a daughter to Ptolemy XII. She was married to Julius Caesar. She had various achievements including speaking multiple languages, influencing the politics of Rome, and impacted governance of western empires. She developed the Egyptian economy and signed trade deals with مساعدة التعيين – خدمة كتابة المقالات من قبل كبار الكتاب العرب, Arab countries (Welch & Halsted, 2019). The two ancient female rulers rose into powerful leadership positions and impacted their culture and economic progress of their dynasties.
Differences
The two female rulers are different due to their diverse family backgrounds and strategies of ascending to power. Empress Zetian was a daughter to one of the chancellors in the dynasty. She received a good education and was highly intelligent. She impressed Emperor Taizong who adopted her as a secretary and later a concubine (Peterson, 2016). She later rose to become an emperor and displayed effective leadership. On the other hand, Pharaoh Cleopatra was born to the Ptolemaic family (Welch & Halsted, 2019). Her father elevated her as a co-ruler. She continued with the leadership after the demise of the father.
Cultural Differences
The government structure of Pharaoh Cleopatra was a theocratic monarchy. The ruler was believed to assume powers according to the will of the gods. People adopted the policies developed by the rulers as the will of the gods (Pedersen, 2019). She promoted the Egyptian deities including Isis, Horus, and Osiris. She developed the country by utilizing the natural resources and trading them with مساعدة التعيين – خدمة كتابة المقالات من قبل كبار الكتاب العرب, Arab countries to boost the economic growth of the country. The Egypt Ptolemaic dynasty had natural resources including copper, gold, and silver (Pedersen, 2019). On the other hand, Tang Empress Wu Zetian thrived under the monarch government structure. The empress promoted Buddhism religion while countering Confucianism and Daoism beliefs (Peterson, 2016). The Tang dynasty was best known for farming crops such as garlic and soybeans, ceramics, woodblock printing, clock making and advances in medicine.
Conclusion
I learned that despite the achievements of the two female rulers, they were committed to retaining their positions using all means available. Similarly, leaders today defame, slander, and assassinate their rivals to assume power. Secondly, I learned that in ancient times, women were embraced as leaders. However, today’s society is against the leadership of women due to cultural bias that women are weak and incapable of effectively leading a nation. Additionally, the leadership of the ancient female rulers was focused on developing their society economically through economic policies and trade deals. Similarly, leaders, today grabble with economic policies to tame inflation and boost economic growth amidst the raging competition to maximize their natural resources.
