Context
Building to think refers to the process of using hands-on activities to generate ideas and
resolve designs.
In this first project, you will be introduced to the attributes of materiality, and encouraged to reimagine the possibilities of creating through making. You are invited to explore your creativity and
develop design skills through manipulation of paper through cut and fold. You will then create digital
representations of the outcomes.
This task builds towards Assessment 3, which will involves creating a model/sculpture that reminds
us that stories are not only spoken and written but are sometimes best told through craft. This
culminating model/sculpture will be produced through the application of information and abilities
amassed throughout the subject. Assessment 1 contributes towards achieving this outcome by
providing you with the opportunity to experiment with form, structure and strength in paper
models.

Instructions
Assessment 1 involves creating four finalised paper sculptures, for which you will also develop digital
representations. You will need to keep a record of the design progression in a supporting process
journal, which will be submitted along with a 500-word critical reflection on the creative methods
applied.
Models/Sculptures
In this subject, you will experiment with a range of shapes and forms through folding and
manipulation. Employ the skills you have developed to create your initial four paper sculptures.
These sculptures should reflect your ability to take risks, to explore potential designs and to
generate fresh new ideas.
Digital Representations
You will also undertake digital workshops that will assist you to create digital representations
of your models.
During the digital workshops, you are invited to explore the Adobe Capture App and Adobe
Photoshop. Using the knowledge and skill gathered in these workshops, you will be asked to create
a digital representation of each of the four chosen sculptures presented in this assessment.
You should use these digital elements to creatively explore and experiment with the software.
Process Journal
The journal will utilize elements of drawing and photography to document the design process.
The journal may initially take the form of a paper diary that will then be scanned or photographed
for upload to Blackboard.
Critical Reflection
The final element in this task is to critically reflect on the positive and negative aspects of the project
and to surmise the ways to improve on the outcomes for future projects.
Submission Instructions
Students will submit to Blackboard for assessment:
• PowerPoint template containing photographs of four sculptures and digital representations
developed using the appropriate software
• A journal documenting research, experimentation and design development
• A reflection identifying the positive and negative aspects of the project, the design processes
used and ways to improve on the outcomes for future projects (500 words +/- 10%)
Convert any PowerPoint or InDesign files to PDF documents and then upload the template, journal,
reflection and any other supporting files via the Assessment link in the main navigation menu in
DSO102 Design Studio 1. The Learning Facilitator will provide feedback via the Grade Centre in the
LMS portal. Feedback can be viewed in My Grades.
