Portfolio: Critical Dance Report

What we need to face right now is the end of the semester. This is also my last

semester studying in SMC. And I fell wistful about this class. This class not only

taught me some historic things about dance, but also taught me something

about how to be a good person. I feel wist fun about the professor. In this class, I

enjoyed every smile in everyone’s face. I enjoyed everyone’s analysis about the

quotation. As an international student, my English is not good enough to explain

such a complex quotation, but I can know the explanation by classmates.

Everyone has their own independent thought, and I admire their thoughts. I also

enjoyed every dance experience. This class relaxed me from a stressful

semester. I can find the inner happen through this class. This class was one of

my favorite and most unforgettable experience in my life. And that’s what I can’t

imagine before taken this class.

Back to our previous lecture, I remember there was a quotation such that “

learning history is the foundation of learning a person and a culture.” At the

beginning of the semester, I only want to know dance, but not history. After this

class, I know that if you want to know something completely, you should get to

know their history and background first. I also think that everything is connected

with the others. Learning dance history is not only to learn something historic,

it’s also a way to learn how to inherit the culture correctly. After learning dance

history, I know the purpose of dance is to exhibit history and culture. And it’s

also a way to express ourselves and release our negative emotions. It’s also a

way to protect us away from the danger. Dance is a good way to keep us

healthy.

Why I think this class important is that I think this class change my some parts

of my personality. Before this class, I am a guy that always hide myself from

other people’s eyes. I don’t want too much attention, and I am also shy. But

through this class, I become more open-minded and warm-hearted. There was a

class that we experience dance together. In our class, we are equal, neither of

us can dance except the professor. We begin to learn how to shake our bodies

and try to express our own style. At the beginning of that class, I was forced to

dance, but after a while, I began to dance with a free heart. Through

experiencing dance, I find the thing I want to find. And I experience another me

without mask.

When heard about it’s a history class, I refused in my heart at first. Because

history means a lot of words needed to be remembered. But the professor gave

us enough freedom and respect. We do not need to explain the quotation, the

professor gave us some important marks to tell us what may test in the exam.

And this history class became easier. And this class became my favorite class of

this semester. With the courage of the professor, and I became more brave to

express myself in public, and that’s what I had never tried before.

What impacted me most is what the professor taught us most. I think that must

be respect and love. I still remember a saying goes like “ Labels are for cans, not

for people.” That is also taught in our class. We can’t decide our own historic

background, we can’t choose our family, we can’t choose our gender, race, but we can choose who we would be. We should respect other people’s culture,

history. If we treat others well, then they will also treat you well. Take dancers as

an example, lots of people gave them labels like “gay” or more serious words.

“Dancers” is only a job that bring something beautiful to the audiences. We

can’t judge them only by their gesture or movement. They just try their best to

show wonderful and perfect show to people. We should respect them. If we treat

them well, then more and more people are willing to be a dancer, and culture

can be inherited more completely.

After taking this class, I think living in the dancing world is such a beautiful

world. There is no judge, no discrimination, no inequality. There are only love,

happiness and respects. Although you may hurt yourselves in the process of

training, but this kind of hurt doesn’t feel hurtful in your heart, in verse you will

feel happy for that. After the semester, I learn how to treat others well and

always smile to others. That’s really an important lesson in my life. Read more

Learning Agenda 2

The study of dance history it is important because we can learned about every kind of

people’s behavior, because a lot of culture people use dance movement to record their history and

stories, and even their life style, so when we learn dance history so we can know better of others

behavior and culture.

I think the meaning and purpose of dance it’s a believes and life style, because when

people believed that when they dance god will protects them, and it is life style because people

use dance to teach kids in school to learn things faster, and use dance train in the army to fight

better.

I think the relationship between people, culture and dance it is a chain connects

everything together because if there is no human then there is not culture, if there is no culture

then there is no dance, this 3 things can’t miss one of it, especial people, because we created of

everything in the earth.

U.S is an immigration country, in this country most of the culture brought by immigrants,

and most of the dance, immigrant brought their dance culture and dance in to this country, and

then some people combined every culture’s dance in to new style of dance.

Dance can be an identity of a person, because some people really love dance, in everyday

live, everything they done mostly relates to dance, they bring the mood from dance to real life,

happiness, joyful, and thankful, they feel like life it is a stage, and they just perform on this stage.

In this course, I learn a lot of new things for my life, I should enjoy my life, be happy

about everything, feel thankful for what I have, the new experience I had in this class was that I get to know more about dance, dance it is not just movement, but culture, life, and people’s

behavior, this face gave me a new point of view on dance, before I thought dance it just body

movement, and to show off.

The three lectures that benefited me the most in this class is art, humanities and social

sciences, because in dance it have lot of meaning, for example, sociology, history, and ethnic

studies, second one it is native Americans – Mayas and Aztecs, because in this lecture it showed

me how native Americans life style is from dance, their culture and their behavior, because there

are the first people who lived in the United States, the third one is Myths and Religion, because

in this lecture, it show me how stories explain the genesis, origin of the earth, its life and its

people, this stories tells us how humanity/all life came to exist.

The three areas that I grew in is, life, because I learned how to enjoy my life more, and

feel thankful for what I have now, second one is knowledge of dance, I learned more about

dance, learned that in dance, you can learn about others behavior and cultures, the last one is life

experience, because in this class we watched 2 dance performance, this is my first time to watch

dance live, I Feld great about dance, and it was fun to watched it with friends.

I think my girlfriend gave me the most intense learning high in this semester, because my

girlfriend always encourage me to study harder, and gave me motivation on something that I

want to give up on, and I just meet her this semester, she is like sun light in my life, make me

bright.

I think the history of dance has impacted and influenced me learning on dance this

semester, because I want to know more about each culture’s behavior from dance, and behind

dance, it has a lot of stories. At first I thought dance it is just movement, people created for show and for money

purpose, not I had changed of my thought, dance it is life, and culture, people dance because they

want to record the behavior or their culture and pass to the next generation.

This class teaches me how to be happy, how to be thankful for what I have in life, and

how beautiful is life, in life we have so many things that we can enjoy, we can enjoy the time

with our family and friends, etc.

In this class the time I felt most valued and affirmed is when the professor said that you

should feel thankful for what you have now, I think it is very true, because in my life I have so

much things that I can enjoy but other can’t, and I feel thankful for what I have.

I am going remember a few thing that I can carry on in my personal life, fist, it is to enjoy

what I have, and what I going to do, second it is to be happy, last feel thankful for what I have.

The purpose it is to fished my general education requirement, second I got recommended

from a friend, he told me that I can take this class to learn more about life, and it is like a

philosophy class, and it is true, in this class it taught me about dance history, but the professor

taught me about life, the most important that he said was feel thankful for what you have, I will

never forget this.

In conclusion, this class it is a mix of dance history, and learning about like, honestly in

this class I learned a lot of other peoples culture and life, and I also learn life in this class. Read more

INTRODUCTION: Learning Agenda 1

The reason I chosen this class (dance 2), because I know dance 2 is a class that talks

about dance history and how dance impact people’s life, and the most important thing that I want

to take this class is I want to know when is dance invented, and what is the purpose of dance, and

what does it represent to us, I want to find out all this things that I want to know, all these things

are catching my interest. And I also like to watch dancing shows, especially modern dance, such

as hip pop, locking, etc… I want to find out what is behind it, and what the purpose of it.

This is and dance history class, of course I want to discover what it’s the history behind

dance, why we have to dance, to show off or to get people’s attention or it is a cultural thing to

represent yourself. And the most part I want to find out is what it’s the culture behind every kind

of dance and why we have so many kinds of dance move. I know every country have their own

style of dance, and even in each country they divided in to so many different kind of dance, so I

want to find out why we doing this.

Honestly I am not a dance person and I don’t know how to dance, so I don’t have any

experience that I can bring to this class. But I like to dance, especially hip pop and locking

dance, because when I watching people dance it gives me excitement from them, because of the

way how they move and the music they playing are so powerfully, and showing off front of the

girls and getting their attention, I don’t know if this consider as experiences by knowing the

name of the dance, so I guess this is all I know.

Well…. I don’t know much about dance, but dance to me it just body movements. To

relief yourself from tired, and dance it can also be creative, because you can create all of your

moves and what music you want to dance with. And I know people use dance to tell stories in different culture, and I also know dance it can be emotion, some people decided to show their

emotion by using dance instead of face showing.

I think there are two purposes in dance to me, first one is to tell stories, because I know in

each culture people use dance to tell story, they dressed in different customs and singing or

speaking while they are dancing. The second purpose I think is to get people’s attentions, or to

show off, show people how awesome are they; they dance to get girls, to make friends, to make

money as a career.

I believe that I can learn how dance impact people’s life, and why people chosen dance as

a career, why is dance is important to people as well as to culture. The four things that I want to

learn from this class is the culture of dance, because I know each style of dance have its own

culture and I want to know what the culture is in then dance. The purpose of dance, because I

want to know why people dance, dance for who and what. The History behind dance, because I

want to know when dance its invented, and why people created dance. And how does dance

impact people’s life, because I know some people are crazy for dance, they chose dance as their

career and make so little money, I want to know what is in their mind.
