PHI 413 Topic 1 DQ 2 What aspects of the topic readings do you find the most interesting

PHI 413 Topic 1 DQ 2 What aspects of the topic readings do you find the most interesting

This is the most thought-provoking course I have ever taken, and I have taken a lot of them. After reading the first chapter, I had to dig deep to analyze my own viewpoint, which was a difficult task. It is the first time I have been asked to explore my worldview, which is comprised of my thoughts about what reality is and how I interpret my experiences of our world in accordance with my worldview (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). It wasn’t until I finished reading this first chapter that I began to understand my own worldview and realized that it had evolved over time. I also realized that each person has their own worldview, which may explain how they approach certain moral or ethical issues in their personal lives and in their professional practice in health care.

Despite the fact that my worldview has evolved, what I do and find valuable in my life continues to follow the same moral and ethical compass, although one that has been simplified in my opinion. At first, I did not consider my viewpoint to be religious, despite the fact that I am a practicing Catholic who no longer attends Catholic mass. Although I no longer consider myself to be a Catholic, I maintain a strong belief in God and make an effort to live a life of virtue with the assistance and grace of God. I have maintained a largely consistent personal character, morals, values, and mannerisms throughout my life. These characteristics are reflected in my professional nursing behavior and practice when caring for patients and engaging with coworkers. According to my beliefs, I have a solid basis that allows me to make the most ethical judgments possible in both my personal and professional lives. I believe that now that I have given serious consideration to what my worldview is, it is critical that I hold myself accountable to constantly doing my very best in my personal and professional life and practice. Everyone has had a difficult time over the previous two years of Covid’s existence. Even though we may be exhausted, unappreciated, or disrespectful, it is critical that we dig deep if required in order to be kind, caring, and courteous to our friends and family, as well as to coworkers, patients (and complete strangers).

The fact that everyone has their own worldview means that there are many diverse perspectives on illness and healing. Some take a scientific or religious approach, while others may take a combination of the two. Because of my faith in God and the knowledge I have gained from science, I believe I fall into the category of those who regard disease and healing in a positive light. The account of the 26-week-old infant who was born with a brain lesion is eerily similar to scenarios I have encountered in my professional nursing practice. In this circumstance, I would inquire about the patient’s religious beliefs and determine whether or not they desired to meet with a priest or chaplain in person. I believe that withholding treatment or causing the death of this kid on the basis of what this infant’s prognosis may be in a few years is wrong. We have no way of knowing what medical discoveries may be made in the future that may be extremely useful to this infant in terms of improving their quality of life. To provide the greatest possible care for this infant, many people must work together to accomplish this goal. If a parent decides to do something based on the advise of the infant’s doctor without contacting a priest and another professional, I believe that they are making a mistake. I’ve had to care for babies who were born too soon or who were born with congenital health conditions that were not compatible with a normal life. One instance that comes to mind is when the parents did not want to embrace their infant kid as it drew its last breaths, and the child died. The nurses were instructed to remove the infant from the patient’s room upon their request and place him or her in the nursery instead. The physicians were taken aback when the 20-week-old baby was born alive and found that it had maintained a heartbeat for nearly 30 minutes. It was a horrible experience. As a result of providing comfort care for this infant, I sobbed as the heartbeat was stopped. Even much I tried, the sadness was too much for me to bear and I couldn’t keep it together. I didn’t hold it against the parents of this infant who chose not to hug and soothe their child while it died. As I proceeded to provide her appropriate medical treatment, I expressed compassion and sorrow to my patient. I reminded myself that I was not this woman and that I was not living her life, so I could not be biased against her or pass judgment on her because of the poor decisions she made throughout her pregnancy or how she acted after her child was delivered and died. It is possible that as a younger nurse, I was less sympathetic and compassionate toward her. It is also possible that I criticized her for the poor decisions she made, such as using illicit drugs while pregnant, which was the primary cause of her preterm delivery and subsequent death of her kid. That is one of the ways in which my worldview has grown and has influenced my professional nursing practice for the better.

Bogue, D.W., and Hogan, M. (in press) (2020). Christian spirituality and ethics are founded on fundamental issues. In the book Practicing Dignity: An Introduction to Christian Values and Decision Making in Health Care, the author says, “Christian values and decision making in health care are introduced to the reader” (1st ed.). https://lc.gcumedia.com/phi413v/practicing-dignity-an-introduction-to-christian-values-and-decision-making-in-health-care/v1.1/#/chapter/1

How about the topics themselves? What components of the readings do you find the most interesting? As a reader, what are your thoughts on the readings’ treatment of disease and healing? Explain.

RESPONSES

Hello, Kimberly, and thank you for your post! I agree that I have never dug this deep to find out what my worldview is and I found a lot of good and interesting information when I was reading the articles. It’s also vital to remember that everyone has their own set of views, and that we must treat them with decency and consideration. Christians believe that when they look to God, it is for the ability to think and reason and explore the world around them, even to understand the workings and diseases of the human body and to help alleviate suffering (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). How do you think we as nurses can assess someone’s spirituality so we can better care for them in a health care setting?
