1. Code of ethics
This is a set of standards that provide guidelines on how professionals should conduct themselves in the course of duty; as such, it stipulates the standards they should uphold. This term is related to the course in that it serves to provide guidelines on how professionals in the criminal justice system are required to behave.
2. Police brutality
This occurs when police officers use unjustified or excessive force when dealing with civilians. This term relates to the course in that it is an ethical issue. Law enforcement officers are required to act ethically by protecting lives and property; police brutality goes contrary with this ethical provision.
3. Probable cause
This refers to the requirement in criminal law that law enforcers have sufficient reason to arrest a person, carry out a search, or seize property that pertains to an alleged crime. The term relates to the course in that it is an important element of ethics. Part of ethical behavior among police officers is to ensure they have probable cause when dealing with suspected offenders.
4. Plain view exemption
This is an exemption to the 4th Amendment’s warrant requirement; as such, police officers are permitted to confiscate evidence and contraband found in plain view if there is probable cause to believe that it is linked to criminal conduct. The relationship of this term to the course is that it highlights when the right to privacy may be breached.
5. Jury nullification
This takes place when a jury passes a Not Guilty verdict even though there is reason to believe that the defendant is guilty beyond reasonable doubt. This term is related to the course in that it highlights the nullification of law by the jury as an ethical issue. This term raises questions as to whether finding defendants not guilty when indeed they are guilty compromises delivery of justice.
6. Apartheid
This is a system of discriminating a certain group of people based on their race. The term relates to the course in that it underlines doctrines in the society that attempted to give injustice and terror an ethical face.
7. Systematic racism
This refers to a type of racism that is entrenched as normal practice within the society. As a result, the systems in place perpetuate racial injustice. The term relates to the course in that it underlines doctrines in the society that have attempted to give injustice an ethical face.
