The Trends in Health Informatics
Health informatics is the interconnection of the information technology and health care design and delivery. As the technology is growing the health care professionals need to utilize the wealth of data that is available to provide quality patient care through understanding the means to leverage the data and the how to develop effective information technology systems. The technology trends that offer directional importance to the future of health informatics involves the simulation technology, nanotechnology, predictive analysis and the Internet of Things (IoT). These technologies can be a difference in the delivery of health care services in the near future and therefore are very important to the society today.
Addressing trends in health informatics, should involve the benefits and challenges that come with simulation technology as a technology trend. Simulation technology is relevant in the provision of artificial representation of the real-world process and facilitates learning by allowing reflection, immersion and practice while excluding the risks that occur in similar real-life experiences. In medical education, simulation offers the task trainers for rehearsal of basic skills and also high fidelity human patient simulations. The simulation technology in the medical and health care field comes with advantages and disadvantages.
Simulation technology in health informatics has the advantages of providing patient safety, dealing with ethical sensitives about patients and reducing the teaching time. Simulation technology ensures that the patients are protected against all avoidable harm and give respect to patients thereby not used for training. The simulation technology in medical education enable the students to be at the correct attitude and skills that allow them to cope with critical situations in a calm and planned manner. Simulation technology in medical education eliminates the ethical issues that comes with using real patient’s data information for teaching purpose. The technology eases the pressure of non-availability of willing patients and experimental animals for the teaching purposes. Simulation offer students with illustrations that give a rapid explosion of knowledge, thereby reducing the teaching time and giving more time for physicians to perform other duties.
Simulation technology faces challenges in the health informatics and its application in the medical practice simulation. First and foremost, the medical simulation falls short in mimicking the human systems which is due to the diversity and complexity of the human systems. Basically, the simulation models and instruments can never match in representing and level of information of the human body. Defective simulation design lead to negative learning, for instance, when physical signs of patients are omitted in the simulations, the students may never consider them in critical human real-life situations. High costs are associated with the simulators with the consideration of the initial purchase and the maintenance charges.
Predictive analysis is a future directional trend in informatics as discussed in Chapter 36, which is very important to our society today. Health care organizations are employing predictive analysis to deal with the pressure to achieve improved care coordination and stability in the patient care outcomes. Predictive analysis deals with the predictions of the future outcomes using the available past data and involves statistical areas using data and machine learning algorithms. It is, therefore, a combination of human-centered care and analytics to deal with the inefficiencies that health providers face with the patients and also meet the unique need of the patients.
The implementation of the predictive analysis in health care delivery lowers the health care costs and improves the quality of care through the utilization of the data-retrieval capabilities of the technology. Patients data can be extracted from Electronic Health Records, medical equipment and devices as well as wearable technologies. The utilization of the technology also offers data cleaning and risk calculation within the health care organizations. Decision making in the organization is also enhances and improves the patient’s outcomes, and enhance the patients experiences as well as reducing the health care costs. Health care professional with knowledge and experience in informatics that involve health care should lead the incorporation of predictive analytics as a component of the health care delivery.
The application of the health informatic trends including the simulation and predictive analysis technology depend on the organizational leaders to prioritization in informatic projects. The organizational leaders follow the activity and process as described in the Health Information Technology Governance Activities and Processes summary. To prioritize the informatics projects, relate to the implementation of informatics trends, the organizational leadership should align with the Information Technology system of the organization. For the governance activities, the IT leadership must report directly and work seamlessly with the organizational leadership.
The main governance activities of the organizational leadership are evaluating, directing and monitoring. Evaluation of the organization focus on the strategy portfolio and the organizational relationship with other entities as well as to ensure the stakeholder needs are met and the health informatic align and comply with circumstances in the organizational environment. Directing activities focus on assigning responsibilities to the governing health informatic and IT leaders to prepare and implement strategies and policies of the organization. The monitoring activities involves the checking of the organization’s performance on continuously by focusing on practices and processes. The organizational leaders in health care services evaluates, directs and monitors the activities of the organization to understand how the health informatics trends can be incorporated to informatics projects by the identification of their use and challenges in the processes of the health care organizations.
