Chapter 5 Definitions
1. Jail; refers to a place where individuals who have committed minor crimes are held for short periods of time.
2. Prison; refers to a place where people who have committed serious crimes are held for long periods of time.
3. Incarceration; this is the state of being confined in prison.
4. Linear design; refers to a type of jail that has long rows of rooms placed along a corridor.
5. Podular design; is a type of jail where many cells face a central area.
6. Private prison; denotes to a prison that operates for profit, and is a place where criminals are imprisoned by a 3rd party contracted by a government agency.
7. Programming; refers to practices or classes provided at correctional facilities for prisoners.
8. Police lockup; is a temporary holding facility of a state, local or federal law enforcement agency to hold prisoners awaiting bail or transport to prison, or intoxicated persons until they are ready to be released or juveniles awaiting parental custody.
9. Minimum security facilities; prisons with the least levels of limitations on inmates’ activities and movements.
10. House arrest; is the state of imprisoning an inmate in their own residence.
11. Electric monitoring; is a type of digital incarceration, usually in the form of an ankle “shackle” or wrist bracelet.
12. Juvenile; this is an individual who is not old enough to be perceived as an adult.
13. Education and vocational training; refers to a form of training that seeks to equip prisoners with general skills of employment.
14. Counseling; is the act of guiding inmates so as to assist them to work through issues that trouble them.
15. Detox program; is a program aimed at helping drug/alcohol abusers in jail get rid of toxins from their body systems.
