When compared to the 1974 Copolla film, the 2000 A&E television adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” takes place in a more archaic setting. The video begins with the main actor having a break by a pool and being photographed from a distance by an unknown subject whose perspective is unclear. Prior to the shooting, though, the narrator begins with a piece of advice that his father has given him. The setting for this video is entirely along the ocean, which represents a sense of tranquility and peace to the viewer. While this is true in the Copolla version of the film from 1974, the film begins with a classical old backdrop in which the audience is shown a mansion that depicts luxury and riches. Furthermore, photographs from magazine cuttings featuring images of one of the performers are projected onto the screen. Although the ocean and pool locations that are presented at the beginning of both videos are different, there is a striking connection between them. Swimming pools and the ocean can be seen in both videos, which provide a sense of tranquility and peace to the viewer.
The entrance of Gatsby is a significant difference in the two videos, as can be observed. In the 1974 film adaptation, Gatsby comes by boat and is picked up by Tom at the seashore in a car that is being escorted by a private driver. In the 2000 version, Gatsby arrives at Daisy’s mansion by car, rather than on foot. When it comes to the videos, Daisy is clothed in a white gown that depicts aristocracy and opulence, which is appropriate given the enormous fortune at her disposal. According to the videos, if the 1974 version attempted to convey a sense of modernism, the 2000 version did the polar opposite, portraying a more antique backdrop. The 2000 version is more visually appealing because it begins with a character shot without any explanation, and the viewer becomes enthralled as they try to figure out why the character is being shot.
