Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) in 2013 admitted 818 new youths. In 2014, the institution new admissions were 785. TJJD new admissions for youth in 2015 were 808, with 823 new youth being admitted in 2016, and 802 new youth were admitted in 2017.

In the fiscal year 2017, Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) admitted 802 new youths, that included 742 male and female were 75. The top three offences to have been committed by the new youths include aggravated robbery, which had 158 of new admissions representing 19.7% of the total new admission in 2017. The second top offence was burglary that had 98 youth representing a12.2% of the new admission in 2017. The third top offence of youth admitted in 2017 was aggravated assault, which had 84 youth representing 10.5% of the new admission in 2017. In 2017, the top three committing counties according to the new admission included Harris with 199 youth representing 24.8% of the new admissions that year. The second committing county was Tarrant with 53 youths a representation of 6.6% of the 2017 new admissions. The third top county in terms of new admission in 2017 was Bexar that recorded 44 youths a representation of 5.5% of the new admissions in 2017.
3. Provide a profile summary of the new admissions in 2017 in terms of the age at admission, gender, race, and reading and math achievement below grade level. (6 points)
At the time of admission in 2017, the age at admission included 7 youths with age between 10 to 12 years representing 0.9% of new admissions. 25 youths (3.1%) were aged 13 years old, 74 youths (9.2%) were aged 14 years, 178 youths (22.2%) were 15 years old, 294 (36.7%) of new admissions were of age 16 years, and new admissions with 17 years or older were 224 representing 27.9% of the new admissions in 2017.
In terms of gender at the time of admission in 2017, male youths were 742 representing 92.5% while female youths were 60 representing 7.5% of new admissions.
In terms of race at the time of admission in 2017, Black or African American recoded 350 youths representing 43.6%, Hispanic were 313 youths representing 39%, Whites were 136% representing 17%, and new admissions from other race were 3 representing 0.4% of new admissions.
In terms of reading and math achievement below grade level at the time of admission in 2017, 684 youth a representation of 85.9% of new admissions were had reading achievement below grade level, while those with math achievement below grade level admitted were 710 representing 89.5% of new admissions in 2017.

Describe the overall patterns of parent marital status (separated or divorced), incarcerated household member, history of family violence and household substance abuse among the new admissions from 2013 to 2017. What are the implications of these findings? Adverse childhood experience is considered important when admitting youths to the institution. Family structure and household environment have long-term and profound effects on adolescent well-being. Various patterns of the youth’s household experience at the time of admission from 2013 to 2014, include parental marital status with consideration of separated or divorced parent, which indicated that from 2013 to 2017, most youths at the time of admission had adverse childhood experience resulting from it, with all years recording more than 80% related cases to parents separated or divorced. The pattern elating to incarcerated household member adverse childhood experience of youths admitted from 2013 to 2017 indicates a high number of youths were exposed to the family or household members that had been incarnated, with each year recording over 55% of the exposed youths. In terms of history of family violence, the pattern of admission from 2013 to 2017 has remained consistent across the years, with 41-51% of youths admitted having been exposed to the adverse childhood experience. Although the adverse childhood experience relating to household substance abuse remaining below 46% of the youths admitted from 2013 to 2017, there is a pattern of consistency that shows the household experience not dropping below 38% creating a huge concern.
The adverse childhood experience findings are significant for the institution, the government, and other organizations concerned with child affairs as it can be used to plan strategies to tackle the issue of juvenile delinquency in the society and design correctional and treatment mechanism that direct solve the issues.
5. Under “Overall Treatment Needs”, what were the percentages among the new admissions in 2017 for three separate categories (i.e., any specialized treatment need, two or more specialized treatment needs, and three or more specialized treatment needs)? What are the implications of these findings for the Texas juvenile justice system? (4 points)
The overall treatment needs among new admissions in 2017 include 99.4% of youths requiring any specialized treatment need, 86.6% requiring two or more specialized treatment needs, and 46.6% requiring three or more specialized treatment needs. The findings will help the Texas juvenile justice institution to design and plan treatment structure and approaches based on the overall treatment needs and define the priority of treatment of each category.
