There are several strategies that can be used to secure an SQL server. One way is to strictly restrict access to the physical server; physical access to the hardware components should be limited as well. For instance, locked rooms with limited access for the database server hardware and network devices can be utilized. Furthermore, it is vital to restrict access to backup media and this can be attained by storing it at a safe offsite location (Rankins et al., 2013). Another approach is to have surveillance cameras where the physical server and hardware components are situated. These cameras are important to as to monitor the activities around the server room and capture any suspicious activities.
The Windows Only Authentication mode basically enables Windows Authentication and disables SQL Server Authentication. In this regard, the Windows Only Authentication mode would thus be used because it is much safer compared to the SQL Server Authentication. This is because mode utilizes Kerberos security protocol, offers password policy implementation with respect to complex validation for passwords that are strong, offers support for account lockout, and supports the expiration of password (Yudin, 2013). This is why a connection made utilizing this authentication mode is at times referred to as a trusted connection since SQL Server trusts the credentials that Windows provides.
The SQL Mail capability refers to an enterprise solution that is used to send email-messages from the SQL Server Database Engine. Utilizing the SQL Mail capability, the database applications can send e-mail messages to users. That said, there are several circumstances under which he SQL Mail capability would be enabled. One such circumstance is when a person wants to notify the DBAs of looming problems. Another circumstance is when one wants to make notifications of task completion.
