Crime Prevention Specialist (CPS)
My desire is to be a crime prevention specialist whose major role is educating citizens on how to prevent crimes from happening to them (SecurityDegreeHub.com, 2018). This offers one the opportunity to interact with different groups of people such as schools, local communities and several law enforcement agencies. The interactions are very significant in coming up with solutions to the different related challenges. Other responsibilities of a CPS include development of homeland security disaster and emergency response plans and utilization of environmental designs to prevent losses and crimes Criminal Justice Degree Schools, 2020). For one to be a CPS, a lot of skill is required in thinking creatively, critically and analytically. These skills are needed in development of strategic plans focused on the maintenance of safety and security among communities. These strategic plans are also used by the law enforcement agencies.
The minimum qualification requirement is a high school diploma or an equivalent to that. A two to four year associate’s degree in criminal justice, political science, sociology or a field related is also required. A background in criminal justice is vital experience. The National Crime Prevention Council provides coursework for trainees to complete in order to earn the National Crime Prevention Specialist Certification. When one is hired as a CPS by an employer, on-job training needs to be done for one to become conversant with that particular environment (Criminal Justice Degree Schools, 2020). The job’s remuneration depends on the level one has achieved depending on location, experience, certification among others. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates median national annual salary to be $61600 (All Criminal Justice Schools, 2016). Benefits offered depend on the kind of specific duties done, the state and company regulations.
One advantage of this job is the flexibility in duties, location and time taken to handle different projects. The flexibility allows one to engage in other things when there is not too much work. Nonetheless, it requires extensive research to deal with different upcoming issues which could be very exhausting.
