The brain is one of the biggest and most complicated organs in the human body. Yet, there is the need for mental health professionals to study the brain because it influences behavior and mental states. According to Ingersoll & Rak (2015), mental illnesses can be attributed to problems with the communication between neurons in the brain. For instance, the amount of the neurotransmitter serotonin is lower in people suffering from depression (Ingersoll & Rak, 2015). Furthermore, abnormalities in how certain brain circuits work contribute to the development of most mental diseases. Linkages between nerve cells along particular circuits or pathways in the brain can negatively affect the way the brain processes information, and may thus lead to abnormal thinking, mood, behavior and perceptions (Ingersoll & Rak, 2015). Also, alterations in the shape or size of various brain parts may be responsible for causing several mental illnesses. Therefore, studying the brain will go a long way in increasing the mental health professionals’ understandings of the connections between the brain and behavior as well as come up with appropriate treatments for these conditions.
In as much as many efforts have been put towards studying and understanding the brain, it always seems that something is lacking in our knowledge of the brain. For instance, despite many years of effort, there is no understanding of the mechanisms that link the structure and function of the brain at the microscopic level to behavior and cognition or to the big-scale patterns of activity observed in imaging studies (Estrin, 2018). Research has also done little to stop the rising tide of mental illness, an indication that something is amiss. There is also little to no knowledge about the models of interrelationship of the mind and the brain.
