For example, the particular detail that makes an apple red is the property of redness, and the particular detail that makes it different from a banana is the combination of redness, roundness, and sweetness.

Another possible account of specific particulars is the Aristotelian theory, which holds that particulars are substances that have properties as attributes. On this view, a particular apple is a substance that has redness, roundness, and sweetness as its attributes. The concept of particular details on this account is that they are the attributes of the substance, or the ways that the substance manifests itself. For example, the particular detail that makes an apple red is the attribute of redness, and the particular detail that makes it different from a banana is the manifestation of redness, roundness, and sweetness.

Both accounts of specific particulars have their advantages and disadvantages, and there is no definitive answer to which one is correct. However, by comparing their concepts of particular details, one can gain a better understanding of their implications and challenges. For instance, one challenge for the alternative version is to explain how properties can exist independently of substances, and how they can form coherent bundles. One challenge for the Aristotelian theory is to explain what substances are in themselves, and how they can have different attributes in different situations.
