The security of maritime transport
The security of maritime transport is a vital aspect of the global economy and the well-being of people and the environment. Maritime transport is exposed to various threats, such as terrorism, piracy, robbery, illegal trafficking of goods and people, illegal fishing and pollution. These threats can have serious consequences for the safety of life and property at sea, the security of trade and energy supply, and the protection of marine ecosystems and coastal regions. Therefore, it is essential to implement effective measures to enhance maritime security and prevent or respond to potential attacks or incidents.

To achieve this goal, maritime security requires cooperation and coordination among various actors, such as governments, port authorities, shipping companies, international organizations and regional bodies. Some of the key instruments that regulate maritime security are the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which includes the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, and the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation (SUA Convention), which has been amended in 2005 to address new threats. These instruments provide a framework for establishing security standards, procedures and responsibilities for ships and port facilities, as well as for enhancing cooperation and information exchange among states and relevant stakeholders .

However, maritime security is not only a matter of compliance with international rules and regulations. It also requires constant vigilance, innovation and adaptation to the changing nature and dynamics of the maritime domain. As new technologies emerge, such as autonomous vessels, cyber systems and artificial intelligence, new opportunities and challenges arise for enhancing or undermining maritime security . Therefore, it is important to foster a culture of security awareness and resilience among all maritime actors, as well as to promote research, education and training on maritime security issues. By doing so, maritime security can contribute to a safer, more secure and more sustainable maritime sector.
