DISCUSSION POST # 1 gg
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the use of health-promoting services, products, or systems that are not usually part of traditional Western or conventional medicine (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018). When CAM is used along with conventional medicine, this is called complementary medicine. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says that alternative medicine is when CAM is used instead of conventional medicine (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018). Even though CAM is fairly new to the health care field, it has been used for more than 5,000 years. CAM is becoming more and more popular in mainstream health care, so nurse practitioners need to know how to use it safely and effectively to help integrate care (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018). Biologically based practices are a subset of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), which includes things like herbal therapy and using other natural products. It is thought that 80% of the world uses herbal medicine in some way. Even though herbal products are popular, there aren’t many rules about how they are made, tested for quality, or what they contain (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018). Herbal remedies aren’t regulated as closely as prescription drugs, but they can have the same effects on the body. Given that they could react badly to prescription drugs or have problems with surgery, it is important for the nurse practitioner to know about these reactions and look over the patient’s information carefully. For example, there is evidence that the hawthorn herb is a good cardiotonic (Orhan, 2018). It can also cause things like nausea, tiredness, headaches, heart palpitations, and so on. Due to its effects on the heart, the nurse will need to check all of the patient’s heart medicines to make sure there aren’t any interactions (Orhan, 2018). The nurse practitioner will need to know what to do and give the right information while making the patient feel comfortable.
DISCUSSION POST # 2 kk
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a group of different medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not currently considered to be part of conventional medicine (Tabish, S. A. (2008, January). The list of practices that are considered complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is always changing. This is because CAM practices and therapies that have been shown to be safe and effective are being accepted into “mainstream” medicine. Today, CAM practices can be put into five main categories: alternative medical systems, mind-body interventions, biologically-based treatments, manipulative and body-based methods, and energy therapies (Tabish, S. A. (2008, January).
As nurse practitioners, it depends on the patient and what kind of alternative medicine would help them. Use of natural products is one example. It’s just important to know if any natural products have side effects or interact badly with other medicines the patient may already be taking. So, when you look at your patients, you should also look at any herbal supplements they take. Probiotics are living microorganisms, like friendly bacteria, that are found in the digestive tract of a person. They are taken as a supplement or as yogurt or other fermented foods to help the digestive system (Edelman, C. L., and Kudzma, E. C.) (2018). As Nurse Practitioners, we can easily recommend probiotics or other things that have been approved and are safe for most patients to take. They help regulate the system and help with many digestive problems. You can get probiotics without a prescription because you can buy them over-the-counter.
There is scientific evidence that eating foods with probiotics in them is good for your health. When it comes to preventing and treating some conditions, this evidence seems to be enough, but when it comes to others, it is just promising or even controversial. Some of the best-known effects are bowel disorders like lactose intolerance, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, infectious diarrhea, and allergies. More and more evidence is also showing that they may play a role in a number of other conditions (Kechagia M. et al (n.d.). I haven’t found any bad things about this kind of treatment, since it helps to increase the healthy bacteria in the gut.
