Explain the similarities and differences between the roles anrs

By Day 4
Post a brief description of each of the two critical incidents you selected to which helping professionals respond. Then, explain the similarities and differences between the roles and responsibilities of those responders. Finally, share the insights you gained or conclusions you drew based on the comparison.

Student 1
Post a brief description of each of the two critical incidents you selected to which helping professionals respond.
Incident 1: Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut in October of 2012. It made landfall in South Jersey on October 29th and caused $70.2 billion worth of damage, left 8.5 million people without power, destroyed 650,000 homes, and killed at least 72 people (Peer, 2021).
Incident 2: A coworker unexpectedly commits suicide after being sexually assualted by a superior. This coworker was friendly and never presented with feelings of stress or unhappiness. They were friendly but not close with any of the coworkers. The superior has now been fired but has left a lingering presence, causing employees to feel unsafe and reluctant to come into work. This sudden event resulted in co-workers feeling overwhelmed, scared, helpless, and a complete lack of control (The UN Refugee Agency, n.d.). It can leave people feeling unsafe and under an intense amount of distress.
The boss has been fired, but his presence is still there, making people feel unsafe and not want to come to work. Coworkers felt overwhelmed, scared, helpless, and like they had no control after this sudden event (The UN Refugee Agency, n.d.). It can make people feel unsafe and make them feel a lot of pain.
Then, explain how the roles and responsibilities of these responders are the same and different.
When it comes to Hurricane Sandy, people who help, like social workers, have more than one job to do. They could help with case management by finding several different services (like homeless shelters, places to live, food pantries, etc.) that will be useful for the client and his or her needs after a disaster (Yeshiva University, 2019). This is different from Situation 2 because the person will be giving case management to the whole office, not just to one person or group. Someone might need help more than someone else. For example, after a sensitive situation like this, the person giving help will need to be able to tell if anyone is showing signs of suicide or is likely to hurt themselves (SocialWorkDegreeCenter.com, 2022).
Case finding is another important part of a helper’s job. This means that the helper has to tell disaster victims about the relief services and other resources that are available to them (Yeshiva University, 2019). This is the same as the second situation because the person who is helping is teaching. As a helping professional, it is their job to talk to people at work about suicide, mental health, and the resources that are available to them (SocialWorkDegreeCenter.com, 2022). This also includes reaching out to people. These people need services that are easy to get to, helpful, and easy to use (Yeshiva University, 2019). In both cases, the person who is helping will need to reach out in different ways because each person has different needs. People deal with loss and trauma in different ways. Because of this, they will need different kinds of help and resources.
Also, these victims will need help from advocates. As a person who wants to help people who have been hurt by the hurricane, you will need to help your clients figure out how to use the many services and deal with the complicated situations they will face (like insurance, relief programs, support groups, counseling, shelters, etc). (Yeshiva University, 2019). This also holds true for the second group of people. They will, however, need help in a different way. They could pay more attention to mental health, counseling, support groups, and education about suicide and how to stop it.
A professional who helps people could also do brokering. This means moving people from one program to another to better meet their needs after a disaster (Yeshiva University, 2019). This will also be true for Situation 2 because people will react in different ways after a traumatic event like this one. These answers could require resources and services that are outside of the helper’s area of expertise and will need help from someone else. The person who is helping could send the victim to someone else who could help them better.
Lastly, talk about what you learned or what you learned from the comparison.
Before I learned more about critical incidents, I thought that social workers and other people who help people had very different duties depending on how serious the situation was. Even though that’s still partly true, I’ve come to realize that these people who help people do a lot of the same things but use their skills to fit the situation. People can feel upset, messy, lost, out of control, and more after these kinds of sudden and traumatic events. Helping professionals are trying to lessen the bad effects on these victims and get them the resources they need based on who they are and what is going on in their lives. Everyone reacts differently to disasters and traumatic events, so each situation will need a different set of resources and types of help. But, even though each of these situations is different, the roles of social workers and other people who help people are pretty similar. At the end of the day, these professionals who help people use their skills to give aid and help victims of all kinds of crises deal with them.
