Statement of Purpose
Ever since my formative years, I set targets that were beyond my peers. Combining my natural leadership qualities, critical thinking, creativity, and attention to detail would make me a successful researcher. From a young age, I desired to learn and lead people towards the achievement of set goals. As a result, I choose to undertake a bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. I was fascinated by this program because I was interested in how biology and technology impacted medicine. However, technology has always been a great interest for me since I started using computers heavily while in college. The desire to use technology to create tools that would make lasting changes and improvements in different fields in the modern world pushed me to seek instructional and universal design skills for learning, multimedia, and effective e-learning delivery approaches. Therefore, enrolling for a Master’s of education, Learning Design and Technology will be a major commitment and investment to my future. The learning experience will help fill knowledge gaps in optimizing how people learn and provide me with a platform to create impactful change throughout my career.
Besides, while in college, I joined extracurricular clubs whose activities aligned with my interests. As such, one club propelled my interest in utilizing technology to craft content meaningful to campus students. As part of my club activities contribution, I created content to help first-year students navigate college during their first year. Moreover, creating presentations and developing courses became interesting, which led me to work with first-year college students in their academic journey. Working with first years showed me the potential learning, design, and technology has in designing and evaluating empirically grounded and educationally informed learning environments and crafting programs that effectively employ emerging technologies in educational setups.
Moreover, while in college, I also worked as a research assistant, which required me to use different software to complete my projects. Working with first-year students in developing course materials and presentations led to work in the faculty’s career counseling department. The mentorship I received from senior staff in the department provided me with knowledge and skills in computer-based virtual courses used by the faculty to find a career path that aligns with their interests and personalities. The courses result in an in-depth career counseling session with a counselor to discuss results and develop solutions to help the student. While working with the career counselors, I understood education technology and its importance in student learning.
Therefore, enrolling for a Master of education, Learning Design and Technology will provide me with the skills that transcend cultural and geographical boundaries. The program will provide me with key competencies required in achieving my career goals of optimizing how people learn by designing programs, modules, and e-learning tools that optimize digital training efforts. The program will also furnish me with effective online communication skills using visual or oral technologies and assessing and applying data analytics in the evaluation of digital learning tools for online learners and training programs. Considering my academic and career goals, I strongly feel this master’s program will allow me to look into problems from a different perspective in searching for solutions to current online learning challenges. I believe your program will challenge me to explore my limits by providing a good scholarly climate that will encourage me to explore my intellectual curiosity.
