Process Paragraph defined: Whenever you explain how something occurs or how to do something, you are using process writing. There are different types of process writing. One type, called process analysis, explains such matters as how tornadoes form or how certain foods contribute to cholesterol problems. One type explains how you, the writer, did something, such as organized a weekend park cleanup or prepared for a scholarship interview. The most common type, often called how-to writing, presents instructions for filling out a financial form or negotiating through a level in a video game. For your next short writing assignment, you will write a HOW-TO paragraph that explains how to do something or how something works. You need to avoid recipes or manual-based instructions (such as how to recharge your iPad. I also want you to avoid using numbered steps in your paragraph). 50 points
The following are some examples of a process paragraph:
Inserting a contact lens is a simple process. First, take the lens out of the fluid it is stored in and rinse it off. Next, place the cleaned lens on the tip of the index finger of your dominant hand. Check the edge of the lens to make sure the lens hasn’t turned inside out. It should look like the top of an opened umbrella. Using your other index finger, pull down gently on your lower right eyelid to expose more of the white of the eye. Then carefully place the lens over the iris, or colored part, of your eye. Blink once to make sure the lens is securely in place. If you can see clearly through that eye, repeat these steps for your other eye.
Losing weight can be a difficult and time-consuming process, but if it means better health, it’s worth it. There are many ways to decrease calories. One way is to limit your portions. If you eat 30-40% less than you do now, you will lose; however, you need to make sure you are getting enough calories. Losing too much weight too fast is unhealthy. Another way to reduce is to cut out sugar and carbohydrates and focus on eating vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. This, combined with regular exercise, is the most healthful way to lose.
Your job is to write a process paragraph (at least six-ten sentences) using at least two transitions and varying your sentence structures to include at least ONE sentence that begins with a subordinating conjunction.
