Analyzing the Effectiveness of Seafarers Training in Nigeria
Being one of the best paying jobs, becoming a seafarer is one of the most highly regulated careers to venture into Nigeria. To become a seafarer, one is not only required to have academic qualifications but also practical experience at sea. Having even the highest academic qualifications alone without any practical experience at sea is not enough to become a seafarer.
Below are the minimum requirements you need to fulfil before becoming a certified seafarer in Nigeria.
Complete the Basic Seaman Training (BST) Course from a maritime institution in Nigeria, such as the Maritime Academy of Nigeria. The basic training covers aspects like personal safety, survival training, first aid, and firefighting.
Get your BST certification, a seaman’ book that acts as an identification/passport in the maritime industry, and a transit visa.
Appy and get a job in marine or any Nigerian accredited shipping agency.
Finally, after you have secured employment, the next step is to register with NIMASA to become a legitimate and registered seafarer officially.
By legitimizing your status with NIMASA, you will also be issued with a Seafarer Registration Certificate (SRC), after which you will be free to practice and explore other career options within the maritime industry.
