Clinical Field Experience D Targeted Teaching Activities
The teaching activity involved helping a student to read and write. The activity was using whiteboards and markers. I gave the student the alphabet strip as a visual to help them locate the letters. I would make a sound, and the student would locate different letters. For instance, the student quickly recognized letters such as F, W, and I. It only took the student a little bit longer to recognize some letters, such as E, C, G, and K. The activity involved working with the student to develop sentences. For instance, the first sentence was, “I am planting flowers.” The student was excellent in writing the sentence despite difficulties with some sounds. The student successfully put a period at the end of the sentence.
The conversation with the mentor teacher was about kindergarten standards and how she incorporates them into the learning process. I learned how to use the standards to help the student learn sounds, letters, and sentence writing better. The conversation was about how to improve the student’s performance through guided reading. The conversation since the mentor indicated some of the assessment methods she used to improve learning. For instance, focusing on one sound at a time was essential.
After the conversation with the mentor, I was inspired to design a fun activity with my student to help them improve their learning. I observed that the student loved playing games. Playing games and learning different sounds and letters was an important starting point. The pre-assessment results allowed me to identify the areas to work on. It was essential to start with the guided reading activity to determine the letters she is good at and the ones she struggles with.
I plan to use the knowledge to prepare the preschoolers for kindergarten. I learned that the starting point is to identify the strengths, such as learning about the easiest letters the students can identify. Learning the alphabet will help me to improve sentence writing and reading skills. I also learned the need to use a lot of visuals. Visuals improve student memory and ability to recognize letters and sounds.
