Introduction
Every institution or organization or institution provides codes of ethics which guide the members on how to be managed and how to perform their operational duties. Organizations designs codes of ethics in a way that they guide members on carrying out their ethical responsibilities. Public Relation Society of America has provided codes of ethics which to prevent any form of misconduct and enhance their trust from the members of the public in their operational duties. Similarly, the American Market Association provides their code of ethics to provide instruction for the marketers against any form of market ignorance or conflict. This paper provides a comparison of the codes of ethics controlling these two organizations with a discussion of the gap that exists in the ethics provided that need to be addressed.
In the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the reputation value of the members depends on the organizational affiliated code to the members involved. The codes of ethics of the organization on the advocacy targets at serving the interest of the public. The organizational members are expected to act as responsible advocates for the represented members in the organizations. The PRSA provides a voice in the marketplace to facilitate relevant ideas, facts, and viewpoints that facilitate informed public debate on market advancement (“Code of Ethics – Public Relations Society of America,” 2018). PRSA adheres to the highest level of honesty and truth while addressing the interest of the represented parties and in addressing the members of the public.
The American Market Association (AMA) code of ethics addresses the issue of ignorance and conflict to facilitate the smooth running of the American market and businesses. These ethics are meaningful to the members while addressing issues on making moral market judgments and enhancing truth and transparency. The organization’s code of ethics addresses three moral principles enhancing economic justice which basically include equivalence, contributive justice, and distributive justice (“AMA Code of Ethics,” 2003).
The American Market Association (AMA) codes of ethics allow provision of information, allowing every member to access the right information concerning the market structure and trends. The association requires the members to provide the members of the public with the correct information concerning the products in question to enable them to make the right market decisions. In the PRSA, the members are expected to safeguard the information gathered for privacy purpose. PRSA considers the action of entertaining government officials beyond legal limits and violation of government requirements to be a violation of the organization’s code of ethics, an issue that is not clearly defined in the AMA code of ethics.
The code of ethics safeguarding competition in the PRSA may need to be reviewed especially on the matters the organization considers to be a violation of the outlined code of ethics. For instance, sharing of information among organizations is essential for the enhancement of healthy competition in the market for the benefit of the target customers. The code of ethics should also define “malicious Information” that is considered to be unethical as well as the organization’s information that not need to be disclosed. I would suggest that the organization should enhance the relationship among the members to create a conducive environment that provides every member with the need to observe the set code of ethics for the benefit of the organization and the targeted group.
Conclusion
The PRSA and the AMA provide the code of ethics and principles which guides their members while performing their duties. These codes of ethics are essential in protecting the welfare of the organizations and that of the members. The established code of ethics among the two organizations enhances honesty and fairness, credibility, independence, and promotion of the responsibilities of the members. These code of ethics also defines the expected responsibilities and duties of the members in enhancing the goals and objectives of the organizations.
