Family Heritage Assessment
Family Heritage Assessment
Different families adopt diverse traditional health and illnesses beliefs and practices. The assessment of health heritage is essential in the identification of traditional resources that are important for supporting health within the community. Having Cuban origin, I have learned about many traditional practices for maintaining, protecting, and restoring health from the assessment of one of my family members.
According to the assessment conducted, Cubans recognize and value natural and traditional medicine. They use the hereditary knowledge and follow a holistic approach in order to promote health, prevent and diagnose diseases, and rehabilitate patients. The society has integrated the traditional health sector with the conventional treatment of modern Western medicine for improvement of the health of the patients. Developing and consolidating the millenary practice, Cubans try to safeguard the production, distribution, and commercialization of natural products (“Natural and Traditional Medicine in Cuba…,” 2018). The conducted interview indicated that modern healthcare is advancing, especially in medical care, education, health research, health promotion as well as controlling and evaluating compliances of the healthcare measures.
The extended health maintenance traditions of my family include an adaptation of better health practices and nutrition control. A minor link is observed between the health traditions of Cuba and religion. The interviewer indicated that she paid little attention to religion and interaction with other people in society. Evidently, both conservation of traditions and integration of the western culture in health management exist. Moving to the United States has influenced the culture and traditions of the family in a minimal way, as most of the family members have conserved their traditional beliefs and practices in health maintenance, protection, and restoration. For the promotion of their culture, Cubans in the United States live in neighborhoods with members of the same background. This feature has resulted in the insignificant improvement of the health status of the ethnic group and interaction with other civilized ethnic groups in the United States.
