Health and safety onboard oil tankers
Shipping is generally a high-risk industry. The risk is even higher for seafarers involved in the transportation of oil and oil-related products. Maritime accidents involving oil tankers can be hazardous, with serious outcomes involving loss of life, property damage, and environmental pollution.
And while general rules and guidelines are addressing the health and safety of seafarers on board ships, there are more specific and stringent measures put into ensuring the health and safety of seafarers onboard oil tanker ships.
In the attempt to promote the health and safety of seafarers on board, IMO, through the conventions it endorses, has put forward additional special requirements for oil tankers transporting oil over the sea. Some of these measures include;
i. Every tanker must have fire protected and totally enclosed lifeboat
ii. MARPOL requires that oil tankers must incorporate the double-hull system or any alternative tanker design approved by IMO to reduce the effects of oil spillage or fire upon accidents.
iii. Fire provisions for oil tankers are also more specific and stricter than standard dry ships since the risk of fires onboard oil tankers is much higher.
iv. IMO through the SOLAS convention recently introduced the equipment duplication requirement. It requires all oil tanker ships have all major navigational equipment duplicated such that control of the ship is maintained in the event of a mechanical failure.
