Healthcare Management Information Systems
Healthcare management information system (HIS) is simply a system used to manage data in health facilities. This encompasses systems designed to collect, store, analyze, and deliver medical data between various recipients in the healthcare environment. HIS technology is a vital component for effective healthcare delivery due to massive data influx in a healthcare setting. Data from these systems can improve patient outcomes by driving policy, informed decision making, research, and ultimately effective and quality healthcare delivery.
Health information systems are available to everyone in healthcare, including patients, nurses, physicians, and public health officials. Some of the most common healthcare information systems integrated into healthcare facilities include;
• Electrical medical record (EMR) and electronic health record (EHR). The electronic medical record technology stores patients’ medical history by replacing the traditional paper-based storage system. The electronic health record system is more advanced as it involves more medical data, laboratory, and other test results. EHR is also designed to transmit medical data between different systems such that healthcare providers can access a patient’s medical information at the click of a finger.
• Master patient index (MPI). The MPI software connects more than one system, allowing the transmission of patient’s information between various databases. The MPI creates an index for all the records for each patient, thereby preventing duplicate records and ensuring that all patients’ medical information can be retrieved through that particular index.
• Clinical Decision support information systems. Clinical Decision support systems (CDS) can go through enormous medical data, recognize trends, and come up with medically relevant information useful to clinicians. For instance, an effective decision support system should generate a list of medications effective for a patient with a particular condition depending on various demographics such as age, weight, and other comorbidities.
• Patient portals. The patient portal software allows patients to access their medical data from the internet. They can also access information concerning appointments, medications prescribed, laboratory, and different test results without necessarily visiting the health facility. Some patient portals may also facilitate online patient-doctor consultation.
With the increasingly complex medical field, health information systems are the gateway to effective and efficient health care delivery. HIS has multiple benefits, but they tend to mostly focus on the efficiency and management of data. This is achieved through various drivers, including data analytics that gathers, compiles, and analyzes data to improve patient care. The ability to aggregate a patient’s medical information, analyze it, and identify trends creates high-level healthcare administrative systems that will enhance patients outcomes.
