Choose a topic
Writing a research paper requires full concentration and focus to ensure you deliver quality work. The first step is choosing a topic. The topic should be interesting for you and also for the readers. Avoid choosing too technical and generic topics. Be specific. For instance, if you are covering a topic about social media narrow down to a limited scope like the effects of social media on youths. Choose topics with a wide range of information.
State the thesis
The second step after choosing the topic is stating the thesis statement. A thesis is a belief or a statement expressing your stand about a topic. For example, social media addiction reduces effectiveness. The thesis is your reference point in the entire paper you should come up with information to support it.
Do research
After coming up with a topic and the thesis. Gather all types of information related to the topic. Remember to note down the citations. After gathering information filter it and remain with the data that is only relevant to your topic.
Begin writing the research paper
An outline is the design or layout of a research paper. It is divided into various sections. It begins with a title page, followed by abstract, introduction, methodology, findings, discussion, and finally the conclusion. The title page has the topic, name of the author, publication date and the name of the institution. The abstract has a summary of the entire research paper. The introduction provides background information and a leading sentence to the research paper. It should be catchy. Use an anecdote, rhetorical question or statistics to hook the reader. It should be short and contain the goals and the research question. End it with the thesis statement.
The methodology is the various methods used to collect data. Whether it is through interviews, literature, observation or questionnaires. Include into details the various methods you used. The findings entail the results of your research. The data you gathered. The discussion comprises of a deeper analysis of the findings. What the results depict. The conclusion section should emphasize the findings and give recommendations.
Edit and proofread
After writing your paper. Proofread it, go through it sentence by sentence, word by word and correct any grammatical and punctuation errors. Remove filler words and any other superfluous information that makes your work look fluffy. Ensure your thoughts flow and one paragraph leads to another. Hand in the paper to the supervisor after proofreading.
