Laboratory Information Systems
Laboratory Information Systems
The article discusses Laboratory Information Systems in Molecular Diagnostics and attempts to explain why molecular diagnostic data is different. The article identifies the challenges that are involved in the laboratory information system, including molecular test ordering, informed consent concerns, and the diverse specimen types. These challenges have been addressed by a laboratory information system based on molecular test data management. The paper is satisfactory in the explanation of challenges and concerns of information management in the molecular laboratory diagnostics laboratory.
The article starts the introduction of the paper with an understanding of molecular pathology, which has brought about the need for data and information management. The explanation of the different Laboratory information systems that effectively used in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology domains. The article identifies that there is a difference in diagnostic molecular testing with the fundamental basis of data, information, and workflows. It is clearly stated that, previously, most of the molecular information management solutions made use of paper methods and spreadsheets that created the risks for manual data errors.
I like the way the paper discusses each issue of the molecular diagnostic laboratory information systems from the molecular test ordering, informed consent, and the diverse specimen types. The discussion effectively highlights how the current paper method and spreadsheets should be replaced by a better design of the Laboratory Information system. The article explains the issues that relate to the molecular test report design and also discusses the issue that surrounds the optimal molecular report design. One aspect I dislike is the excessive use of abbreviations throughout the article, which makes it difficult for a non-professional to understand the concepts and arguments of the article.
