In recent years, health care has progressed from research utilization to become a strictly evidence-based practice. After graduating college and as a new nurse joining the health care industry, one must learn how to use evidence-based research into practice. Evidence-based practice in nursing entails utilizing the best available evidence and clinical expertise with patients’ needs in delivering health care. EBP is an integral part of nursing care as it ensures an improved decision-making process, which in turn promotes patient satisfaction and overall better health care outcomes.
Becoming a nurse leader/manager puts one in a position that requires you to lead and spearhead a group of nurses in the course of practice. Among the primary duties of a nurse manager is to see that all nurses in the unit learn and understand how to effectively integrate EBP in bedside care delivery. They are tasked with promoting the use of EBP during patient care and ensuring that the nursing practice remains relevant and current. As a nurse manager, there are various approaches that I can use to promote the best use of EBP within my unit.
First and most importantly, I will ensure that all nurses under my supervision are well versed with EBP as a dynamic, continuous, and ever-changing process. I will teach them and ensure that they understand how to find, evaluate, and integrate research studies into practice. Even though the skills are learned as part of the nursing curriculum, incorporating the theoretical knowledge into clinical practice can prove an intimidating task.
Another approach that I will use in promoting EBP is encouraging teamwork among nurses and other medical professionals. Collaboration among nurses has been proven to be a key mechanism in achieving an effective evidence-based nursing practice. Besides, the nursing unit does not work in isolation. It will be my priority to promote a collaborative health relationship between the nursing unit with other departments.
In addition, I will also be actively involved in ensuring that all the resources required to facilitate the successful implementation and adoption of EBP are availed. This includes physical resources like technological advancement and research materials, and intellectual resources, like education and training. I will also work closely with my team members, actively involving them in setting unit vision and priorities and regularly communicating with them concerning what is expected of them.
Above all, the most effective way of promoting the effective integration of EBP into nursing care will be through leading by example. As a nurse manager, I will openly use the best and most current research studies available when delivering care to my patients. This way, other nurses will be inspired to follow in my path and strive to do their best even in the absence of supervision.
