NB: I expect 4 subtopics to address 4 questions below. Be creative and don’t mention your mentor by name but rather by profession. For example, “my mentor is my father, mother, uncle, teacher, or you can use celebrity personalities like Obama, Oprah, etc.” Unless it is a celebrity/icon, DON’T name them.

In Unit V we examined how crucial it is to be an effective communicator at work. But the power of communication reaches beyond doing business day by day. As we discussed in Unit V, strong interpersonal skills are needed to be successful in life. Developing your interpersonal and leadership skills go hand-in-hand.

One of the most challenging times most of us ever face is when we tackle the job application process. Again, effective, convincing, communication becomes key. Even if you are successful and land the job of your dreams, you usually must go through a trial period of employment to see if you are a good “fit” for the job. That is why it’s worth making an effort to “meet coworkers and identify potential mentors” (Anderson & Bolt, 2016, p. 111). The process of applying for a job is, for the vast majority of us, one of the most difficult situations we will ever encounter. Once more, communication that is both effective and convincing becomes essential. Even if you are fortunate in getting the job of your dreams, most employers require you to work for them for free during a trial period to see whether or not you are a good “fit” for the position. Because of this, putting in the effort to “meet employees and identify possible mentors” is definitely something that should be done.

Most of us at some point have had someone mentor us. (i) Who has been a mentor to you and with what effect on your personal or professional life?

(ii) How would you define the role of a mentor?

(iii)How would you advise a friend or colleague to go about finding a mentor?

(iv) How might an organization’s management or human resource department address your needs or that of a colleague being newly introduced to corporate culture?

As we move into Unit VII, we will examine ways of conducting a job search that lands you in your dream job and identify tools and methods you can use to put together the perfect resume package that will have HR managers smiling your way.
