Microsoft Turns to Data to Drive Business Success
Microsoft contains and uses both structured and unstructured data to implement its business operations. Structured data entails data stored in databases or spreadsheet while unstructured data entails data embedded in different data sources and need to be extracted for their various uses.
Examples of structured data
In this regard, Microsoft data found in the cloud services to enhance the monitoring and evaluating the business performance (Someh and Wixon, 2017). Moreover, the data found in the senior management dashboard identifying business systems and accountable results for the business owners formed part of the structured data. More so, data contained in the organizational data silos was structured as it was used in managerial decisions making. Equally important, data found in different metrics such as the IT metrics and dashboards are structured as it was used in decisions making in various departments. The dashboard content was created through the incorporation of technology and processes within a short period that making it to derive vital information from it. Additionally, the consolidated sales data consist part of the structured data that defines the organizational direction in profit-making and revenues levels. The structured data is vital in enhancing decisions making as it displays different aspects within the organization, thus enhancing the taking of other actions.
Example of unstructured data
The examples of unstructured data include the unit sale figures that need to be extracted and improved to enhance customer engagement, actual product usage to measure performance and growth (Someh and Wixon, 2017). Consequently, data from the untapped sources regarding metric indicating customer attitudes on Microsoft operations and services form part of the unstructured data. Moreover, textual data retrieved from customer surveys and polls sentiment analysis and social media forms part of the unstructured data. The unstructured data is raw and needs to be transformed and modified to enhanced organizational decision making.
