Palestinian-Israeli Conflict
The ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israelis is one of the world’s longest-running and intractable conflicts in history. Basically, the dispute revolves around issues relating to the territories. The conflict can be traced back to biblical times, but the most recent and modern historical perspective of the conflict occurred between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Jews fleeing prosecution from Nazi Europe flooded and dominated Palestine, an Arab dominated region, and later wanted to establish a Jewish majority nation in the region. The Arab countries in the middle east region retaliated the idea a conflict was born. However, this did not deter the Jews from executing their plan, and after years of violence, two states were finally formed in 1948, one Arab and the other Jewish.
In the years that ensued, the Palestinian-Israeli disputes have continually flared up into major conflicts, including multistate wars, uprisings, and terrorist attacks. Throughout history, the Arab countries have been actively fiercely supportive in the struggle for the Palestinians to recuperate the land that they believe is rightfully theirs. However, more than seven decades down later, the Arab nations do not appear as aggressively engaged as they were initially. So, what has changed? Due to the aftermath of the uprisings in 2011, most Arab states have opted to prioritize security and economic concerns at the expense of the Palestinian cause. The reduced involvement and support by the neighboring Arab nations have, in turn, directly impacted the ability of Palestinians to seek and obtain financial and other forms of aid.
The American government has also been actively involved in trying to restore peace. The Palestinians believed that the Jews were able to conquer them with hep from other states, including the US. As such, the Us government has been vigorous in various attempts to resolve the conflict. In 2013-2014 the secretary of state Kerry initiated negotiations between the two parties, but unfortunately, the two parties could not reach an agreement. Since his appointment, President Donald Trump has made it a priority to resolve the conflict. His decision to relocate the U.s embassy to Jerusalem was supported by the Jews but heavily criticized by the Palestinians.
Jordan has also played a crucial role in the attempt to solve this historical dispute. Jordan was actively involved in the formulation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution, which sought to restore peace in the Middle East region. Jordan’s commitment to the peace cause surpasses most of the other regional parties. When the Israeli government declined negotiations with the Palestinian delegates in 1991, it was Jordan that interceded to ensure that the two parties came to terms.
Despite all the long-term peace efforts, the reconciliation between the Palestinians and Israelis look like a lost cause. The key issues are in regard to mutual recognition of the parties, security, borders, and freedom of movement between the regions. These incessant disputes hamper tourists from accessing his historically and culturally endowed region.
