Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice
In her novel, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen portrays various roles that women played during her era. Women, at this time, took the position of lady companions or governesses. These jobs allowed women to earn income without sacrificing their position in society (Austen n.p.). However, the working conditions of these jobs were, at times degrading and unpleasant to the women. The governesses could be preyed upon by the men they worked for. On the other hand, the lady companions would be given menial tasks to attend to and be treated poorly by their employers. Also, women’s formal education was limited due to a few job opportunities. Society could not acknowledge a woman’s ability to enter a certain profession and thus not offer them a chance to do so.
Contrary to women’s roles in Jane Austen’s era, women today play various roles in society. Women are educators. Compared to Austen’s era, women are more literate in the contemporary world. They also contribute to the global workforce, which contradicts the role they played in the nineteenth century. Women nowadays are involved in informal and formal labor. They also play their part in global volunteering. In the past, as portrayed in the novel, women were confined to their communities. However, in recent years, they continue to carry out community development work. This has strengthened the capacity of women and ensured sustainability in their healthy development.
In a nutshell, Jane Austen’s novel suggests that despite women not being taken through formal education in the early years, they played various roles. These roles ranged from governesses to lady companions. Women involved in these jobs, however, faced various challenges in their daily responsibilities. Contrastingly today, women are involved in a variety of roles compared to the earlier years. They include roles in education, workforce, and global volunteering.
