Renaissance occurred between the 14th and 16th centuries. It began in Italy and spread to other parts of Europe like Germany and Scandinavia. Renaissance was characterized by cultural, economic, and political rebirth. It was a period in which great scientists, artists, and philosophers thrived.
Renaissance epoch brought about a transformation in the Christian religion. It not only changed the outlook towards humanity but also the Christian faith. The protestant reformation occurred during this period. It was a revolution that led to a split of the Catholic Church. The revolution was initiated by a German monk called Martin Luther.
Before renaissance, humans were perceived as sinful beings that needed to protect their souls. However, during the renaissance, they were viewed as successful beings with God-given talents and abilities. This led to the emergence of great artists and scientists.
After the invention of the Gutenberg printing press, great scholars such as Erasmus took the initiative to translate the bible to other languages to ensure many people get to read it. They emphasized the philosophy of Christ that consisted of applying the teachings of Jesus Christ. Due to the translation of the bible, people such as Martin Luther were able to read it and question some of the teachings. This led to the protestant reformation.
During renaissance artists focused on the teachings and experiences of Jesus Christ, unlike the past when they concentrated on the divine and mortal part of him. Before renaissance, they painted pictures of him closing his eyes as if he was asleep rather than dead. This depicted a picture of peace and salvation. During the renaissance, they painted a picture of him suffering before his death and those around him mourning.
Biblical teachings emphasized on human dignity. They stressed on human achievements. There was a renewed interest in learning and understanding human philosophy, Greek texts, and exploring nature. Scientists did not find any contradictions between exploring nature and knowing more about God. Great literature, science, and art were discovered during this period. Scholars believed that studying and understanding the bible was the way to social and spiritual transformation.
The renaissance began in Florence city. It started as a revival of the Greco-Roman culture. However, when it continued spreading to other parts of Europe such as Northern Europe, more emphasis was put on the Christian religion, and some aspects of the Greco-Roman culture were downplayed. This led to the emergence of the Northern renaissance.
