Research Utilization versus Evidence-Based Practice
Research Utilization versus Evidence-Based Practice
A nurse relies on evidence-based practice when making critical decisions in their line of work. Research utilization and EPB are related in that both are used when a nurse needs to identify a problem. However, there is a significant difference between the two terms. This paper will discuss the difference between research utilization and EPB.
Research utilization can be referred to as the process by which generated knowledge is synthesized and disseminated in order to make a positive impact in the nursing practice. The process of nursing utilization was developed by researchers in order to solve the challenge of using research findings. Evidence-based practice generally seeks to examine the findings from a research, improvement of data quality and provide an expert opinion in identifying the methods of improvement. While research utilization seeks to disseminate data irrespective of quality if the research and evidence, EPB looks at the reasons to why the existing method was used and this is in search of improvement. EPB also comprises of the best evidence that was extracted from a high-quality research.
Evidence-based practice involves other facets of nursing such as health promotion, diagnosis, disease prevention and management of chronic illnesses. It also attempts to provide a cost-effective care which help in improving the patient care. Research utilization, on the other hand only criticizes the information from different sources. It also seeks to understand how the information can be used in improving patient care. Research utilization has a relatively smaller focus as compared to evidence-based practice.
In conclusion, both approaches are used by nurses to improve the quality of health of a patient. Most researchers tend to describe research utilization as a subcategory of evidence-based practice though there is a significant difference between them. Evidence-based practice involves a combination of clinical expertise and research utilization of current resources.
