Writing an excellent dissertation is crucial. It not only sharpens a student’s research and writing skills but is also part of academic writing that one must handle tactfully and successfully before graduating. A good dissertation does not only depend on originality and creativity but also on structure, planning, and organization. It is made of several sections. The first page of a dissertation is known as the title page, it is followed by abstract section, acknowledgments, table of contents, introduction, methodology, research results and discussion, conclusion, references, and appendices.
The title page consists of the name of the student, supervisor’s name, department and faculty, and university name. The abstract section has an overview of the entire dissertation. It has the research objective, methodology, and findings. The acknowledgment part is for recognizing and appreciating those people who played a role in ensuring the success of the research process and the dissertation. For instance, those who contributed finances and others who played a role in shaping up the dissertation such as the supervisor. The table of contents has a list of the various headings and subheadings and the page numbers.
The introduction section contains the research question, aims, and background of the dissertation. It plays an essential role in preparing the reader and notifying them on what to expect from the dissertation. The introduction also contains a motivation such as an anecdote and the significance of the research in solving a problem.
The literature review section contains any previous research conducted that is related to the topic. Analysis of various theoretical frameworks that are related to the research you are about to undertake and an assessment of how the research questions and objectives are related to the literature that is already existing.
The methodology part contains the various methods used to collect data. The participants, procedures, and instruments. This part indicates the approach used and an outline of the sampling technique, location and the tools used in data collection.
After the methodology is the research results and discussion section. This part contains the research results and an analysis of the data collected. Simple graphs are used to represent statistical data.
The conclusion part contains a summary of the whole dissertation, the findings, and recommendations. It is followed by the reference section which entails the different citations used in the entire dissertation. The dissertation ends with the appendices section. The appendices can have maps, interview questions, sample questionnaires or tables.
