Sexual Assault Crime Scene Investigation
There are different types of crime search methods used depending on the nature of the crime scene. This case is a sexual assault scene in an open field; the grid method is the best viable to search the location. For this method, several investigators move alongside each other from one end of the scene to the next. In a sexual assault crime scene, there are different types of evidence to be collected. Firstly, biological evidence. To collect biological evidence, safety gloves are essential. This includes condoms which should be stored in leak-proof containers to avoid spillage or contamination. Secondly, metal or glass evidence, being an assault scene, weaponry such as knives might be present (Muldoon et al. 750). These are stored in tight containers. Additionally, garments and undergarments should be stored in air-tight containers to prevent the contamination of stains.
Being an open field can be shoe prints from both the victims and the perpetrator or tire tracks; thus, the impression evidence must be collected. Notably, photos and videos of crime scenes are essential for later analysis of the crime scene. Notably, where there is hair, it should be collected carefully with tweezers and stored in envelopes for after examination. The chain of custody entails the process of evidence collection and storage. The chain of custody is a critical process in evidence documentation, and a slight error in the chain can lead to the results of the evidence being inadmissible in court. This occurs when the evidence is contaminated, mislabeled, or falls into the wrong hands. A properly maintained chain of custody preserves the integrity of the evidence.
