Why Youths Take Drugs
Boredom, curiosity, and low self-esteem are some of the main reasons youths engage in drug abuse. Alcohol and cigarettes are the most abused drugs that may be seen as normal tendencies among youths. Today, youths have no responsibilities apart from attending school. And as the world gets more economical, parents are busy trying to live for their family. Neglected youths tend to result in drug use out of boredom simply because they have no other activities. A solution to this problem is to ensure one keeps busy to avoid indulging in pastime activities involving drug use. Another reason found among youths who use drugs is curiosity. Some young people, not all, will give in to the urges of curiosity. With so much exposure to social media, youths are likely to start experimenting with alcohol and other drugs to see if the effects will resemble those on television. These tendencies often grow if youths do not receive proper counseling on reality and fantasy.
It is quite common for youths to engage in various activities to impress their peers and boost their self-esteem. Peer pressure may result in drug use among youths who are insecure about their inability to make friends. To fit in, they will most likely drink with their peers to show a commonality of interests. Those who have constant pressure from friends may see drug use to escape the reality of who they are and join their peers. Besides these three reasons, youths may abuse drugs to create a bonding experience. An example is when youths turn to drugs for confidence at a party. Most of us have experienced this scenario where one has to take alcohol to gain the courage to talk to others. All these could be considered as valid reasons as to why youths partake in drug use.
