Conceptual Model
Conceptual Model
Purpose
You will begin the design of your family reunion database, based on some of the needs and requirements you determined last week. You will define specific entities and attributes that you want to include and you will use these to create a conceptual model. The conceptual model is the first of three phases in creating a relational database. Later you will expand the conceptual model to a logical model, and finally to a physical model. The creation of this simple personal database prepares you to design a conceptual model in the business world.
Assignment Instructions
Scenario: You are going to be in charge of your family reunion this year, and you have decided to set up a database to hold all your family information.
Using VISIO or your favorite drawing program, you will create a conceptual model of your family database using Crow’s foot notation. Your Conceptual model must contain at least two tables.
(you can use tables from microsoft word)
Identify the entities and attributes for your conceptual model.
Identify the relationships between the entities.
You will compose a paper explaining why a high-level conceptual model is needed. Explain how you derived your conceptual model, a drawing of your conceptual model and an explanation of how you identified your entities and relationships.
Assignment Requirements:
Use Help write my thesis – APA format, which includes a title page, reference page, and at least 2 pages for the body of the paper. The paper must be written in your own words. You are encouraged to read the assigned readings first to gain valuable insight for your paper. If you elect to include some material from the Web, it must be properly referenced via Help write my thesis – APA standards.
Written work should be free of spelling, grammar, and errors. Points deducted from the grade for each writing, spelling, or grammar error are at your instructor’s discretion.
Instructions for formatting the assignment, including length, style conventions, etc.
Also review the university policy on plagiarism. If you have any questions, please contact your professor.
A conceptual database is a type of schema that does not rely on design and implementation matters. It mainly comprises of the objects and their relationships. When a conceptual database is made for family members, it is vital that all identities and entities are accurately identified (Franconi and Sattler 1999). When this is done the modelling process will be simpler. The key attribute in this particular database is the person whose data is being collected. In a family reunion there is need to have thorough planning. This means that data for everyone hoc is to attend the reunion should be collected and put together. The importance of this process is to ensure that the information collected is as accurate as possible.
The attributes that are going to be utilized I the family reunion include name of attendees, the responses of the RSVP request, attendee phone numbers, attendee addresses and their food antipathies. The attributes provide the characteristics of the entities that give details requires in modelling the family reunion database. Each of the given attributes refers to a particular entity whose characteristics it gives (Johnson, Shannon and Richman 2008). The domain in this case is added to an invitation with the expectation of a response that should come in the form of a string in which case it may be accepted or turned down. Another domain should be added for a name attribute as a date. This will add both the response of the family member and the date which their response is received. The relationship utilized in this database is one to many. The phone number which is unique for each relative will be used as the primary key then it will serve as a key for all other attributes. The relationship method chosen will allow report manipulation (Batra 2005). In this case, the rows and columns do not affect the end result because they do not impact the tables and their relationships.
To identify the entities in a family reunion is very important in order to make the modelling process easier. The main goal of the database is to generate a report indicating who will be in attendance during the family reunion. This means it can be achieved by simply giving a list of the people who got invitations. The family members are the main entity of the database because the schema is built around these members and their data. In order to identify relationship, sin the database, on requires to look at the objectives of the database and find out what requirements are needed to get that result. In order to have an effective database, it requires more than just the name of family members. It requires more data which will be identified in the final report. A database become more effective with greater detail which means it can be used for more than one purpose and is flexible enough to accommodate more data (Batra 2005). The relationship keeps track of the food allergies that members suffer from and the places where they reside. A properly conceptualized model will allow more detail to be accommodated in the database.
