As the world evolves digitally, it becomes clear that the vast amount of online data is now a target for terrorism. The globe is interconnected over the internet, which makes cyber terrorism a serious threat both nationally and globally. Over the past few years, cybercrime has been rated as the fastest-growing threat to security in the United States (Clement, 2019). Not only is this a problem faced by the U.S. alone, but other countries as well. Today, cyberwarfare is slowly becoming the new battleground for governments to push their political agendas. Such actions lead to disruptions and damages to critical national infrastructure. In light of geopolitical events, cyber terrorism is an area of heightened concern that needs more attention.
The United States has, with no doubt, been making adequate preparations to combat cybercrime. Law enforcement agencies such as the FBI are fighting to keep up with cybercrimes’ ever-evolving techniques (FBI, 2020). The agency acknowledges the need to move from traditional techniques to modern ones as they pivot their organization to improve their cyber skills. One of the FBI’s efforts is recruiting individuals who were convicted of hacking crimes and using their skills to boost intelligence. Another of their strategies involves incorporating global partners to fight cybercrimes due to the internet’s vast nature. The FBI hopes to leverage such partnerships during cybercrime investigations while at the same time, raising the costs paid by criminal actors (FBI, 2020). Through working with global law enforcement partners, the United States stands a chance to improve confidence, safety, and security.
The reason why the United States is looking to partner with global law enforcement agencies is that there has been an increase in cyber-attacks supported by national governments. It is no longer a secret that wars have also evolved into the digital world. Cyber espionage issues have seen governments stealing sensitive and intellectual data for an economic benefit (O’Malley, 2020). Big Data has become a commodity that every company, organization, and country hopes to acquire. Cyber-attacks perpetrated by governments aim at hacking public sector databases, releasing the information, or holding onto it as leverage.
A good example of a cyber terrorism group funded by a government is the APT28 group that is part of the Russian military intelligence (O’Malley, 2020). Some of their goals are based on the political influence they need at the moment. They are well known to disrupt and compromise global companies, elections, sporting events, and the media. Many a time, their zero-day attacks are successful in achieving their goals. However, it is not a wise thing for governments to support cyber-attacks as they are equivalent to real-life war. The damages brought about by geopolitical cybercrimes extend to interrupted business operations, revenue loss, and leaking of confidential data.
In conclusion, the United States needs to improve its cybersecurity response to combat crimes nationally and globally. The steps taken by law enforcement agencies are geared to secure Americans’ safety online, as seen by the FBI initiatives. Working together with global law enforcement partners improves the chances of neutralizing cyber threats. The preparations taken by the FBI intend to crush the efforts of geopolitical cyberwarfare and making the internet a safe place for data. In the long run, governments’ goals, such as Russia, result in damages that affect civilians and organizations alike. Best practices can be taken into account to prevent further attacks aimed at politicizing national agendas.
