My definition of the responsibilities of a healthcare manager has changed significantly after studying the course. The reason is that I have realized that healthcare managers are entrusted with the responsibility of daily activities and long-term goals of a health organization (Shipton et al., 2016). Initially, I thought about short-term and daily activities. However, the perspective of long-term goals means a healthcare manager has to consider the trends in healthcare and respond to them promptly and effectively. Strategic planning has to be future-oriented to ensure that all programs are compatible with the changing trends in healthcare (Theile et al., 2016). For example, in the creation of shifts, the healthcare manager has to consider the length of the working hours and the intensity of the work (Shipton et al., 2016). The future perspective has to consider the increasing demand for healthcare services. For instance, healthcare managers in the United States have to consider that the aging population seeking care is increasing. The effective response is to strategically plan for the changes in the long-term.
A healthcare manager requires various skills to become effective including sufficient knowledge about the industry, teamwork, flexibility, accountability, and problem-solving skills. The skills also involve legal requirements and policy changes (Theile et al., 2016). A good healthcare manager should also demonstrate excellence in communication. The communication is effective since they have to work with various teams to accomplish different tasks. A healthcare manager should also possess leadership skills to coordinate various teams and execute different tasks (Theile et al., 2016). Other skills necessary for a healthcare manager include critical thinking, analytical skills and interpersonal skills.
The managers must ensure the proper running of healthcare facilities with minimal challenges. The task is executed by creating a safe and conducive environment for the various healthcare practitioners. The manager should thus be effective in planning, directing and implementing programs (Theile et al., 2016). The diverse skills are important since the healthcare manager is responsible for designing programs, strategic plans, and budget allocations. The managers must also ensure they implement the various programs to improve the quality of care in a healthcare facility.
