Question: Is the motivation to use drugs and alcohol intrinsic or extrinsic? Is entering a life of recovery intrinsically or extrinsically motivated?
The motivation to use drugs is intrinsic rather than extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation entails an individual engaging in behavior with no form of external rewards. The feelings of pleasure that arise from the use of potentially addictive drugs and alcohol motivate a user to retake them (Liden, 2019). It is prudent to note that one may want the drugs but not like them. For many drug users, an increase in their drug addiction negatively correlates to the feelings of pleasure as they decrease. Drugs and alcohol, therefore, become more “wanted” but less “liked.” Research into the motivation for users addicted to cocaine would find that the “wanting” feeling for the drugs was connected to the ventral striatum’s activation in the human brain (Liden, 2019). This part is connected to the amygdala responsible for processing one’s emotions for one’s motivation to use drugs and alcohol.
In regards to recovery, the user usually is intrinsically motivated to make positive changes in their behaviors, including moving away from drug and alcohol use. Following the Self-determination theory application, it would be found that extrinsic motivation that has external motivators is not adequate in making one choose to quit drugs and alcohol (Chan et al., 2019). This is because the individual may choose to recover based on the fear of possible effects but not because of their internal sense of control and autonomy. External motivation has coercion or forceful external pressure attached to it that is not valuable in helping an individual stop taking drugs. The individual needs to be intrinsically and autonomously motivated them to engage in their recovery journey fully. Intrinsic motivation will have users consider themselves as worthwhile enough to quit the substances, thus making positive changes, mainly if provided with empathetic understanding and constant support (Chan et al., 2019).
