The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and EBP
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is a US department of health and human services (HHS) branch that focuses on the provision of evidence regarding healthcare to improve the quality of services provided to patients. The organization focuses on bridging the gap between practice and research by providing scientifically accurate evidence on the different health practices. The organization’s mission is “to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable.” Thus, entailing the integration of evidence into the everyday practice of medical personnel.
As the main purpose of the organization is to connect 3evidence to practice, the organization has to adopt the practices that the research into the field has yielded in its operational model. The evidence is then applied in the different medical institutions based on the recommendations of the research and applicability. The research by the institution focuses on how to improve the medical system rather than on where the medical system requires improving to ensure the best practices are proposed and adopted in the medical profession nationally.
The research conducted by the institution allows for all five stages in the evidence-based practice to be conducted on a small scale then be scaled significantly across institutions that fall within the criteria. The organization’s adoption of evidence-based practice has resulted in all the recommendations by the organization be based on evidence. The understanding that the recommendations by HHS are backed by data obtained through research and then applied at a national level has increased the appreciation for the effort that is put in ensuring the healthcare system in the country is at a world-class level regardless of the size and type of institution as they have to be approved as medical centers for them to operate.
