Assignment: The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker
The term “knowledge worker” was first coined by management consultant and author Peter Drucker in his book, The Landmarks of Tomorrow (1959). Drucker defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services. Does this sound familiar?

Nurses are very much knowledge workers. What has changed since Drucker’s time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired. The volume of data that can now be generated and the tools used to access this data have evolved significantly in recent years and helped healthcare professionals (among many others) to assume the role of knowledge worker in new and powerful ways.

In this Assignment, you will consider the evolving role of the nurse leader and how this evolution has led nurse leaders to assume the role of knowledge worker. You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation with an infographic (graphic that visually represents information, data, or knowledge. Infographics are intended to present information quickly and clearly.) to educate others on the role of nurse as knowledge worker.

To Prepare:

Review the concepts of informatics as presented in the Resources.
Reflect on the role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker.
Consider how knowledge may be informed by data that is collected/accessed.
The Assignment:

Explain the concept of a knowledge worker.
Define and explain nursing informatics and highlight the role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker.
Develop a simple infographic to help explain these concepts.

NOTE: For guidance on infographics, including how to create one in PowerPoint, see “How to Make an Infographic in PowerPoint” presented in the Resources.

Your PowerPoint should Include the hypothetical scenario you originally shared in the Assignment help – Discussion Forum. Include your examination of the data that you could use, how the data might be accessed/collected, and what knowledge might be derived from that data. Be sure to incorporate feedback received from your colleagues’ responses.

Assignment: The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker
The concept of a knowledge worker entails the use of information as the solution framework for handling tasks. There is the reliance on information as the primary framework on which the anticipated value in the given care setting would be realized. Handling information is the key concept in this perspective as a result of the expectation to use the standards to define the areas in which change could be made. The reliance and use of data is akin to the elements of positive progress due to the relevant evidence that would be deduced from the same. As long as data is used, all aspects of performance would remain relevant and reflective of the key elements of progress that could be attained (Murphy
Goossen,
& P. 2015). The level of engagement is imperative in a problem-solving capacity in light of the data being used to define the key approaches that would yield the expected level of performance and associated change frameworks. The decision made in a system in which the concept of a knowledge worker used is imperative in defining the progress that would be realized due to the evidence available to get the best-suited results in the care frameworks (McGonigle
& Mastrian, 2017). The anticipated progress would remain on course for attainment and reflect the primary need for progress.
Nursing informatics is the nursing specialty in which there is a focus on integrating nursing science information and analytical sciences based on the use of data in the interest of managing, communicating data, knowledge, and information with reference to the goal of positive change and progress that it could make. The wisdom in nursing practice in this regard depends on the use of data as the essential guide for active decision-making and the definition of the positive frameworks on which the anticipated value in care would remain on course for realization (Nagle, Sermeus, & Junger, 2017). Decision-making in the system is based on this approach owing to the precise evidence on the desired goals of progress and the definition of the positive advancement goals that would be achieved.
The role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker encompasses organization of the performance perspective in health care settings. This is due to the use of data as the basis of determining the deficits that may exist in health care organizations such that relevant decisions would be made in the course of performance to ensure that the sought consistency in care would always be realized. The nurse leader takes charge of the system and ensures that all vital expectations can always be achieved with reference to the positive advancement created in the performance framework. In such an organization, the element of success trends to be consistent due to the manner in which the key performance indicators have been addressed (Sweeney, 2017). The primary goals of success would therefore remain on course for attainment.
