Evidence-based Practice in Nursing
Evidence-based practice according to stakeholders in the nursing field is an “Integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values” (Sackett). According to Sackett, this evidence is obtained through accurate and structured investigations, the experience of the healthcare practitioners and the principles of the patient. By practices such as improving the work environment and introduction of professional programs such as friendly shifts, evidence-based practices will be involved. Therefore, evidence-based practice brings together research evidence and clinical expertise and pushes for individualized healthcare by conforming to patient preferences. This practice aims at putting current knowledge into healthcare decision making so as to improve health care practices and processes and eventually improve patient outcomes.
This process has been applied more than any other research practices made in healthcare and nursing previously. This attribute of evidence-based practice brings about alternative changes in the research-to-practice attempt. They include new information models or structured analysis and new positions for example, information organizers and transformers. Other alternatives include fresh groups such as inter-branch and frontline management groups, new practice habits and unique disciplines of science (Shojania). The incorporation of evidence-based practice into the healthcare advancement field, created a major overhaul. This shift is evident within the approach nurses suppose about analysis results, how the context for advancement is framed and the way change is employed by healthcare practitioners to remodel healthcare.
Despite of the multiple important improvements, nurses are expected to do much more so as to realize all-encompassing evidence-based practice. A current study of the position of the research practice in nursing indicated that, while nurses had constructive point of view towards it and wished to acquire more enlightenment and expertise, they were still troubled by significant obstacles in putting it into practice (Melnyk BM). An example of executing evidence-based practice points to the issues of adjustment is ‘Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety; TeamSTEPPS’ (AHRQ). It is an evidence centered program. The program presents highly advanced learning and training materials and with its successfully tested effectiveness, reduces patient safety problems and incidences. However, a well thought through implementation procedure is required for an evidence-based practice to be incorporated by a healthcare institution. This is to ensure sustainability of the intervention.
Encompassing best identifiable procedures into nursing using a research-based strategy through evidence-based practices, therefore, results into secure, top-notch and cost-effective health care.
